InterContinental DALLAS - Addison, TX —

I normally prefer downtown locations, but when I saw a great deal for the northern Galleria area pop up in Hotwire, I snagged it. A deal is a deal, after all. Though the location is at least a good 10 miles from where I really wanted to be, the thought of so many Washingtons staying in my wallet made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The hotel turned out to be very comfortable, with good perks in the room and free parking in the surface lots (charges apply for garage parking).

There's tons of meeting rooms and ballrooms, so the emphasis here is very much on business and social functions. That's underscored by the relatively weak recreational amenities: the pool was small, outdoors only, and not particularly attractive. They had a hot tub that's more accurately described as a "tepid tub", and the exercise room was small and hidden away in a remote corner of the hotel, down a dark corridor on the lower level. They do have a tennis court up on the roof, which is nice because when you hit a home run over the fence, you can watch it bounce down onto the hiway 20 stories below. (Extra points for having it land in somebody's convertible!)

The cavernous lobby is built to impress, with polished marble everywhere. There's an Enterprise car rental office on-site along with a small gift and flower shop. They have a business center, though they $20 bill and $50 bill you to death if you actually try to use it (no nickels and dimes at this property!) No exaggeration! Just to use the internet will cost you over $60 an hour!!

Guest rooms are nice. Quiet and very spacious. My bed was great: firm and comfy with a thick pillowtop mattress, oodles of pillows and a heavy duty quilt on top. Good thing too, since my climate control seemed to be stuck on "penguin habitat". Loved the big workdes, with power outlets and internet connectors at desk surface levels, bright bankers light, and comfy desk chair. Love the full bar setup, with different bar glasses and stirrers (I always take my gin martinis stirred, not shaken). The bathroom is nice too: dark brown granite countertops, soft browns and gold decor, and romantic soft mood lighting to put me in the mood to dump a load. Towels are average but the Neutrogena soaps and shampoo smell good. Yep, nice room, all in all.

The hotel's Monte Carlo restaurant is small and intimate. They do a decent, though limited in variety, breakfast buffet for $14. Made to order omelettes, sausage links, fried potatoes, and a few boxes of ordinary Kellogg cereal. Unexceptional to say the least. If I go back, I'll head to the nearby IHOP for similar food at half the price. The hotel's Bristol Lounge was big, loud, and stank of stale cigarette smoke --- to call it "unappealing" is an understatement, I use that word only because it includes the letters P-U!

The Intercontinental in north Dallas is an attractive hotel that's very convenient to the shopping areas of the Galleria. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and nicely equipped. The downsides are unexceptional amenities beyond the function rooms and a location that's inconvenient to central Dallas.
