I recently had a new attic access stair installed which doubled the size of the scuttle hole. This winter has been very cold & I noticed the coldest spot in the house was directly under the new attic access stair. I could feel the cold air leaking down from the attic which also meant the warm air was being lost up into the attic! The attic stair is directly outside the three bedroom doors & very near the thermostat. The air exchange caused my bedroom & home office to be cooler than I desired & since the heat was running more than it should have been doing, I was paying higher electric bills. After some web research, I decided the Insulsure AT-1 Attic Tent insulation kit was the best solution to prevent air exchange & still provide easy access to the attic. I then searched eBay & found it off-price through an eBay seller at less than half the manufacturer's website price. My home remodel contractor installed it in less than an hour. He stapled it to the attic floor around the opening as recommended in the instructions but then kicked the the seal up a notch & also sealed over the staples with duct tape (the silver kind used for actual duct work). To his credit, he went up another notch & also applied duct tape around the perimeter on the stair side. To test it he held a lighter up around the insulation kit & the flame never flickered! That spot is now an even temperature with the rest of the house. You don't feel a bit of cool air standing directly under the attic stair. I believe this investment will pay for itself in energy savings this winter alone. I'm a happy, snug little camper! :)
