Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull —

We don't know exactly how old Indiana Jones the character is, but we know the film series is twenty-seven years old. Actor Harrison Ford is 65, and he's accused in the film of being 80. Nevertheless, he's still just as quick-thinking and pretty agile for a guy that's getting up there in years. As he makes his fourth appearance in the series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, he still has the same weathered hat and same theme music.

Time has moved on for Henry "Indiana" Jones, Jr., and it's now 1957. His father and Marcus have since passed, he's still teaching at the university and is still going on archaeological digs. This gets him mixed up with the Russian KGB, led by a very chilly Cate Blanchett, as they look to him to help them find the mummified remains the U.S. Government has been hiding, as they wrongly assume he's connected to them. He uses the metal in the Russian's gun powder to act as a magnet to find their treasure for them, only to find his old war buddy, Mac, has turned against him and is on their side. The university lets Indie go after this, in fear of anything that seems it could be tied to the Communists.

On his way out of town, Indie runs into a young greaser, Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), looking for his help. Mutt has received a letter from Indie's ex, Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), mentioning that Indie would be able to help find her and his old friend, Professor Oxley (John Hurt), as they have disappeared somewhere in South America. Speculation tells us there's a chance Mutt could be Indie and Marion's love child. By the way that they both deftly avoid danger, it seems more and more plausible.

Indie and Mutt end up in Nazca, Peru, searching for the last known treasure Oxley searched for, the Crystal Skull, the strangely elongated skeletal remains of a skull, that also has large hollow eye sockets. If we didn't know better, we'd think this was from an alien, then again, it is 1957, when there was not only a fear of Communists, but aliens as well. The other interesting thing about this skull is that it attracts metal, just the same as the mummified remains that Indie helped the Russians find. This pretty much tells us that we'll be seeing them again, real soon.

While the storyline in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull does become a little predictable, the ending becomes far-fetched, and just as predictable. However, it's still the same ol' Indie, and the same exciting adventures we expect from him. Being 65 years old doesn't seem to stop Ford from carrying out the Indie role the same as he always has, and the same goes for 56-year-old Allen, although she seems to show her age a little more. As we walk out of the theatre, though, we have the same smile we always did, and we're still humming the theme song, after all these years.

According to all the info out there, Indy is 57 years old. I loved how they didn't ignore he's older now. My favorite lines were, Mac, "This isn't going to be easy." Indy, "Not as easy as it used to be." And of course there is, "Put your hands down. You're embarrassing us." Great review!
