Severe rust after a few years. Would not buy again.

2

Disposal is severely rusted after only a few years of use in a rental unit. Don't think it was used very often. Seems like the main cavity should be stainless or something that does not rust so easily. The disposal stopped and I had to use a broom handle to get it moving again. Pulled large rust flakes out with a magnet. Looks like the large flakes are what stopped it. Appears to be a poor design. Probably using regular steel to save costs when manufactured? It has not totally failed yet but that looks imminent now. Probably time to install another one or eliminate the disposal altogether. Seems like there are so many items that should not be put in it that it is virtually useless anyway.

Its good

The product works very well with my only complaint being that I believe it needs a few more safety features. In all honesty I think this machine could easily severe a young child due to it being so erratic and it makes alot of noise. Other than that however the product works phenomenally.

Powerful Garbage Disposal!

4

When our 10 year old Badger gave out on us we decided to replace it with another since we had had such great luck with our previous one. The Badger 5 - 1/2 horsepower is quite powerful. We are easily able to throw some food scraps down there and it has no problem taking care of it. It was rather easy to hook up and install. Make sure to buy one that comes with a new cord, if not you will have to purchase a power cord for it separately. It looks sharp under the cabinet. It is quite heavy and seems to be good quality craftsmanship compared to some of the other brands and models I looked at. It is sort of loud, probably not one of the quieter one's out on the market, but I'd rather have something that gets the job done and makes a little noise, as opposed to something that is quieter but perhaps not as strong or efficient. If you are in the market for a new garbage disposal, you can't go wrong with a Badger.

grinds everything except it's still a bit noisy

Our apartment manager needed to replace our old garbage disposal because it finally gave out after living here 12 years. I don't think it was ever replaced even BEFORE we moved in either meaning it was at least 25 years old when we had it replaced. They bought us the InSinkErator 5 garbage disposal as a replacement. It has been at least 1 1/2 years since they replaced it and works really well. It's a lot quieter than the old one (That one sounded like a junkyard auto crusher, in my opinion) but it's still has a bit of a noise to it. The manual claims it's a quiet grinder, and will dispose of almost everything you put in it. Don't get me wrong, it is still a lot quieter than our old monster but it's not as silent as it's hyped up to be. I do appreciate that it's also very clean and doesn't have that gunk buildup on the inside that our old one tended to do. I used to need to grind up lemon or orange peels to eliminate the gun and smell to keep the old one clean. I don't need to do that with this one. It's still pretty shiny and new when I peer down the sink.

InSinkErator Badger Disposal is reliable so far

3

I've had the InSinkErator Badger garbage disposal for a few years and it has worked reliably so far, though it doesn't seem to be constructed as durably as other models I have used. Industrial design loves making everything out of plastic, and the plastic housing on this disposal does not inspire confidence. Plastic may be 50% cheaper, but if quality is reduced by only 25% that is still a terrible development. My pipes clog rather easily so I don't toss half of my trash down the drain like some people might, but the power of the unit has been adequate to quickly clear what debris end up in the drain. Like any disposal, over time it will start to smell, but grinding a lemon will quickly and easily make your disposable smell delicious, though only temporarily so. On the installation-difficulty-scale this disposal seemed to be about average. Not being very skilled, such projects often require a bit of struggle, and putting this in wasn't easy, but it wasn't impossible.**

Insinkerator's Badger 5 means it will only last 5 years!

2

A few months ago I noticed rust on the sides of the canister belonging to my **Insinkerator Badger 5** disposal. I thought it odd as I have never had a disposal, of any make or model, rust before. I vowed to buy some black Rustoleum and spray the unit as soon as I could.  I didn't get around to it and soon forgot it completely. A few months went by and I started noticing a mildew smell in my house. I pulled apart the laundry room thinking it might be the seals in my Frigidaire Front Load washing machine. Nothing. I next went to the kitchen and wondered if there was a problem with standing water in the kitchen sink pipes or disposal. I ran cleaners through the disposal and ran bleach through the pipes. Nothing. A week or two went by- the smell remained. Today I pulled a container of adhesive remover out of the chemicals bin under the sink. It had a disgusting thick, black, gooey film on the bottom of the bottle, accompanied with a familiar scent; the phantom mildew smell that had been eluding me for weeks! Pulling the bin completely out, I discovered about a half inch of liquid. I also noticed something dripping from the disposal. Water! Upon closer inspection I noticed that there is no rust on the very bottom of the Insinkerator, but somehow it has developed a leak. I figure I can postpone the inevitable by trying a silicone patch or just give in and replace the unit now as the 3 year warranty has now expired. I couldn't help but notice that the new models only have a two year warranty. I'm looking around for a different manufacturer. **Bottom Line:** With only six years of *very light usage* I would have expected more from this disposal. They have lost my trust and business.

Bought the badger 5 about a year and a half ago.Unit froze up and i removed it to find water had gotten into the main electrical housing. At that point i wasnt worried about warranty repairs electricity and water dont mix, i wasnt interested in a new one and replaced with a different model and maker. To have water to be able to penetrate any part of the housing tells me alot about the manufacturer.could of burned my damn house down, not worth it

The badger 5 disposal is dependable and easy to install.

When buying this product make sure you do have the proper tools to do the installation. With these tools in hand the installation will be easy. What I use is a muti use screw driver, this is a screw driver with differerant tips, I use a basin wrench or strainer wrench, and a pair of chanel lock slip pliers, all of these can be purchaced at you local home improvement or hardware store. These stores will know what you need  to install the badger 5 when you purchace it. The one thing you should always do, is to turn off the electrical supply at the braker when installing the badger 5. That way you know you will not get shocked when doing the installation.I have installed the badger 5 many times. It has been a good upgrade to kitchen remodels. I have even installed the badger 5 in homes with septic tanks and the home owners had no deference in the timing of cleaning out the septic tank. As with anydisposal you need to clean them. The best way to clean out a disposal is to put 3-6 ice cubes down in the disposal, cover, and turn it on. The ice will cut up the stuff built up from using the disposal and clean it out. You need to use cubed ice not ice already  chopped up. Once you put ice down the disposal you can squeeze lemon juice in it to keep it smelling freash. You will find this to be a very good product end have many years of dependable service from the badger 5.

it grinds everything!!

almost too quiet-I'm afraid I may turn it on by mistake one day and burn it out by mistake.  Nice strong motor, sleek drain stopper for times when you are not grinding things up.  I have the one which does not use a wall switch-You have to simply place the sink stopper into the sink's hole and rotate it just a little bit.  There is a magnet which activates the motor.
