There are two types of blank DVD's you can use one being +R and the other -R. Don't ask me the difference but I know there is one as my DVD player doesn't like -R discs. I buy them by the pack and the best buy is the 100 pack of Imation DVD's.

Imation DVD +R Discs

I make my own home movies from my video camera and then transfer them to DVD. I also back up my computer files such as music, video and programs as well. My choice of DVD's is Imation as I can get a 100 pack for less than $30, thats 30 cents a disc and I like that price a lot. In 2 years I have had very few bad discs and would say on average I get 2 or 3 per 100 and those are good odds.

Each disc will hold 4.78 Gigs of information, translated to video thats right at 2 hours. These are one time use discs which means once you burn it you cannot add or edit what you put on them. Which is fine by me as I always double and triple check before I burn. For DVD's I also prefer to write at 8x as I get less mistakes in the finished product, even though my DVD burner is 16x.

Of the discs I have burned I have not had any failures in 2 years of any burned discs that worked after I burned them. So it seems they are durable as well once burned. I HAVE done a few photo/music discs of my Mom, Dad and Brother who are no longer with us and sent them to family members as a keepsake and they turned out great. Not one problem playing on the different DVD players each of them have. I tried a few on DVD -R discs and had compatibility problems with them, but not with the DVD +R discs.

Bottom Line

I trust my family memories only to Imation as they have proved to be reliable and durable as well as compatible with all brands of DVD players. Both computer based, Stand alone and portable players. They are also less expensive than Maxell and the others out there. I recommend these to any one that burns onto DVD's!

there is a few good programs to make dvd's Nero used to have a free version ( not sure if they still do) and it is great. there are a few on zdnet, but I have not tried them because I bought Nero and that's what I use.

I use these too. We have quite a few spindles here because they went on sale around Christmas and I bought several. Now I have to learn how to make a DVD. My kids do it all the time but I never have!

Ron, I paid one last visit to them on their final day and they were down to selling magazines for 90% off. There was nothing left to buy. And I had gone with such big plans!

My DVD unit uses the DVD-R variet and I've used the Imation brand for a few years. Excellent. Recently, I visited a CompUSA store that was being closed (they're now out of business) and picked up a lifetime supply of blank DVDs for the ridiculous price of $5 for a spindle of 50. So far, so good. Rudi
