Here's a great mattress for platform beds! Newer models now in.

4 star rating

looking for durability, interested in good health, quality conscious, value conscious
Pros

reasonable Ikea prices, 25-year limited warranty, new models similar to Forsbacka, supports while conforming to body curves, best for lovers of firm support, same on both sides so you can flip it, very sturdy cover, perfect for platform beds

Cons
big prices may buy better mattresses

Go to Ikea and lie down on a Sultan.  Take 90 days and try one at home.  Ikea will exchange it if you don't like it.

The favorites at our house are the latex and latex/foam models we bought several years ago.  Mine is a single Forsbacka, placed on a box spring.  My husband Pal's is a queen size set on a platform bed.  Both have very sturdy covers which you can clean with upholstery shampoo.  They also come with handles for turning them around or flipping them over.  Best to invite a couple of muscle men over to help though.  Foam/latex mattresses weigh a ton!

I think Pal has the best deal.  His Sultan Mattress rests on the platform and supports, supports, supports his often-tired back.  My Sultan on the box spring has taken a few dips since I usually cozy up in one position.  That said, I'm glad it's my single-bed size that needs the occasional turn-around or flip.  But I continue to look for a platform bed I like.

The latest Sultan foam and latex mattresses have removeable covers.  Ikea's descriptions testify to the latex "feeling lighter" than the foam.  Both, however, allow for double occupants to sleep their own way.  One isn't rolled over when a heavier partner turns.  Newer models also have removeable, machine-washable covers IF... you have the strength to remove them!

One of the inviting things about Ikea's mattresses is that you can buy single pieces.  Most stores insist on selling pairs which can mean a useless box spring for some of us.  Ikea, bless its European practicality, gives the customer lots of latitude in purchasing mattresses and/or box springs and a great variety of bed types.

Never mind the screaming lady cramming her purchases into the car on the Ikea commercial.  For a mattress, Ikea will deliver.  You can scream in delight when your Sultan arrives, if you want to.

I've heard wonderful things about Ikea but didn't know they sold mattresses. This was a great review!

My son is looking for a mattress but I bet these are super expensive. I know he would love one in either of the styles you spoke of though.
