Ikea - Schaumburg, IL —

I love a bargain like the next guy, but Ikea tests my patience...

My husband and I went to Ikea last night to buy a cabinet, farm sink and counter top for our basement. We didnt want to spend a lot of money on custom built in's, so we thought we would just get a standard white cabinet from Ikea.

Our experience...

We were pleasantly surprised by how many options of cabinetry Ikea had. And, they didnt look terribly cheap (despite their inexpensive price tag). Each item was about $200. Definitely not bad given the $10k quote we got for the built in. This was a major plus for Ikea-- good selection and decent styles. (oh, and great price!)

Once we picked out what we wanted, things took a turn for the worse. We waited in line for nearly 1 hour to place our order. Then, another hour or so for our furniture to be ready to pick up. We also learned that the cabinets we wanted were in stock, but the door panels were not so we would need to wait 10 days for those. And, we could come back out to Ikea to get them or have them delivered to our house for $20. ( A 2 hour drive to Schaumburg and back. No, thanks. $20-- sold!)

Oh, did I mention that when they brought the counter tops out, we had to get 3 (yes, 3) new ones because each time they brought it out they dinged them. ANNOYING.

I know people love Ikea and I can understand why. They have inexpensive prices and really cute designs. Their fabrics are adorable, bed frames, kids collection, etc.

But-- you "pay" in other ways at Ikea. You have to spend hours in the store. You have to drive out the boonies (if you are in Chicago). You have to thoroughly inspect your purchases since they often come out imperfect. And, the quality is hit or miss.

All in all, I would rather spend a little more money to have little less of a head ache. It is painful in Ikea. But, that explains why their food court is pretty tasty. Shocking, but true. You will likely get stuck there for hours, so they better feed you well and cheap!

I live in Cleveland but have shopped in the Beaver, Pa store.Which is one of the older stores but has suited my needs last time I ended spending 900.00 bucks and worth every cent. I remodeled my bedroom. Yes you have to checkout some of the quality. 3/4 of there stuff is cheap looking and not worth anyones time. Tank You Bill

Sorry you had that horrible experience. I haven't been to an ikea in years. Ihad only picked up some houseware items. We have been thinking of stopping at one when we move. Maybe I'll call first. Wouldn't want to go through what you did. Did you have your son with you?

I have only been to the IKEA in Coshohocken, PA - the first ever IKEA store in the US (It was at Plymouth Meeting and moved to this location a couple of years ago) and like what I have purchased. I never tried to get anything as complicated as kitchen cabinets - just desks, bookcases, etc.
You can't beat them for price on those items. As long as someone in your household is handy putting things together!

Personally, I love IKEA. I just stay away from there on a Saturday afternoon. Once was enough of a lesson on THAT end. But other than that, I can't say I've ever had a problem. Of course, if I did, I have a good friend who could see it rectified swiftly, but that's besides the point.

I have never been in an IKEA...maybe I don't need to be!

So Jolie...you saved a lot of money (thousands of dollars), but had to put up with some inconvenience? That's a trade-off I would make any day! Plus, you probably went during the worst possible time: a weekend right before back-to-school. Try a weekday morning and you'll fly through the place.

I have to tell you that I've been to this store once. I doubt I'll ever go back. Talk about being over stimulated. Unless I had walked in their for a particular spaghetti strainer (You get the picture.) there's no way I could have bought anything. Getting out of the store was another story! Jo

I live about 15 minutes from the Ikea Bolingbrook. I love the cute designs they have but because of the horrible customer service I've encountered, I've only shopped there twice and will not return.

How ironic we just got our IKEA catalog in the mail the other day, out here in the boonies of Aurora. As my wife will attest I loathe IKEA and refuse to step foot in the place for just the reasons you listed in your review. I'll take Home Depot or Lowes for cabinetry any day.
