Ikea Garlic Press

How is it that Ikea can make such innovative designs with household equipment such as a garlic press? When I saw this piece of equipment in the kitchen section at Ikea I just had to have it in spite of the fact that I already had a garlic press at home. Inside the garlic press is a small container (with holes in) in which you place your garlic, then you place the press on top of the garlic and push the handles together - rather like a nut cracker. The garlic pulp comes out the bottom and the skin is left inside. It is so simple yet so effective and what's really great about this little gem is that it's super easy to clean, you just take out the container (which is not much bigger than a thimble) and wash it. I sometimes find myself putting more garlic into a recipe just because I enjoy using this little piece of equipment. It wasn't expensive and yet it is so durable it will last me a lifetime.

The Ikea Garlic Press Works Well

I love fresh garlic. I love the smell and I love the taste. As a result, I use a lot of garlic. Because of my well known fondness for garlic, I received this Ikea Garlic Press as a birthday gift last year. While finely slicing garlic may not be that much of a challenge or require that much time and/or effort, this Garlic Press does a great job of finely chopping garlic in perfectly symmetric shapes in no time at all. I like the fact that this garlic press is manufactured from stainless steel and does have some weight to it. It doesn't feel cheap or flimsy. So far it has been very durable and it has received a far amount of usage due to my affinity for garlic. Another high point for this Ikea garlic press is that It is also easy to use and doesn't require a lot of force or pressure in order to press the garlic. It is also rather ergonomic and fits nicely in my hands without feeling awkward or uncomfortable. The only minor quibble I have with this garlic press is you need to make sure it is cleaned thoroughly after each use otherwise the head can clog up causing the garlic to become smooshed. Thankfully, clean up is easy and straight forward ensuring maximum operating functionality.

Perfect diced garlic in seconds!

I was a little skeptical when I first heard about the garlic press. I thought "really? I think I can slice up a small hunk of garlic without a special device." Then I got this garlic press as a gift, and now I'm a HUGE fan. All you have to do is separate a clove of garlic from your garlic bulb (I like to remove the outer layer to make it easier). Then place the clove in the press and squeeze. It is so much easier and faster than trying to dice up a clove of garlic with a knife. (And personally, I can never dice a clove of garlic into chunks this small anyways) Cleanup is the most annoying part, and its actually quite simple too. Even if you remove that outer outer tissue paper like layer of the clove, there is going to be a thin film of the outer shell of garlic left in the press. The good news is that is will usually stay in tact as one piece and you just need to scoop it out of the press and compost (or throw away) and then wash. I recommend cleaning your garlic press as soon as you are done with it. Once I was in a rush preparing a huge meal and didn't remove that little film piece until the next day. Unfortunately if it dries up in the press it really sticks to it and is much harder to clean. So make your life easier and wash right after use!
