Plastic One-Inch Cubes by Ideal School Supply come as a set of 100 in 9 bright colors. They have their own sturdy clear container with lid. I know, the name sounds BORING but the uses for these cubes are only limited by the imagination. They are a very educational toy.

For preschoolers the cubes can be used for teaching:
colors
counting
opposites (more or less, over or under...)
fine motor skills (stacking)
creative play (like making trains or cakes)

For school age students the cubes can be used for teaching:
addition
subtraction
multiplication
division
teaching place value (ones, tens, hundreds...)
fractions

We use the Plastic One-Inch Cubes often during school time for hand-on math lessons but the Plastic One-Inch Cubes are also a great toy for play time, family time and especially traveling. When we are going to be in a hotel or rental house for a week, I have to think carefully about the space a toy takes up verses the amount of time it can entertain. The container of Plastic One-Inch Cubes always makes the suitcase cut.

They can be used just like blocks for building, just on a smaller scale.

We have also put them in plastic tubs to create music shakers.

They can become a tub toy in an instant.

They can be buried in the sand.

I've given my kids trays and asked them to design a quilt, using the blocks as "quilt squares." It's so fun to see their unique designs.

I've also given my kids square cake pans and let them create "birthday cakes." They even stack the cubes to make candles. I can't tell you how many times we've sung Happy Birthday over a cube cake!

We found ours at a bookstore that sells school supplies but they are available on line at www.teachersparadise.com for $14.49.

My Viewpoint:

As you can see, this educational toy with the boring name has many exciting uses for learning and fun!
