Ice Age  —

I have seen this movie at least 10 times since 2002. Although it is on TV a lot, it's not the same as watching the DVD. You will never be able to completely simulate the Theater experience (which was really great), but if you get a big screen TV and some nice speakers you'll get pretty close! Hopefully this review will prompt you to rent the movie and try to catch Part 2 as well.

Plot
The movie begins with a squirrel wandering through the ice trying to bury his nut. This squirrel scene has little to do with the movie but is funny and gets you into the feeling of ice and snow and "the Ice Age". The movie really begins with animals of all species migrating away from the ice to find someplace warmer.

Animal 1: Well, why not call it the Big Chill or the Nippy Era? I'm just saying', how do we know it's an Ice Age?"
Animal 2: Because.. of ALL.. THE ICE!!

A mammoth is travelling TOWARDS the ice. Then there is a sloth, Sid, who wakes up to find his family has left him. He manages to tick off some Rhinos. He runs right into the mammoth, Manfred, and begs him for help. Manny decides to help. In a move similar to Shrek, Manny manages to scare the Rhinos off and Sid becomes his annoying and unwanted companion. Manny doesn't want to go South, and Sid doesn't want to head South alone, so he sticks by Manny as they wander towards the snow.  Then comes the humans, that part you can see for yourself, but the point is that Manny and Sid end up finding a baby in the water and pulling him out. Manny's ready to just walk away, but Sid won't have any of that.

Sid: [as Manny walks away] Manny, are you forgetting something?
Manny: No.
Sid: But you just saved him.
Manny: Yeah well I'm still trying to get rid of the last thing I saved.

Sid convinces Manny to bring return the baby to its tribe, Will they return the baby? or will the sabers make off with it? And will they survive this weather?  You'll have to see!!

Voices/Characters
Ray Romano .... Manfred... Ray plays the same type of character he plays in Everybody Loves Raymond. He is a depressed character that thinks everything sucks. However he still has a good heart and ends up helping others even when he doesn't want to. He's very sarcastic and most everything he says makes me laugh. His character will entertain the adults as well as offering up a cute cuddly animal for the kids.

John Leguizamo .... Sid ... John is most known to me for his part in Moulin Rouge but has also been in a lot of other movies. He's funny in the opposite way of Manny as the stupid-funny instead of the sarcastic funny. His character will definitely entertain the kids AND the adults alike. He may be really dumb and lazy, but he still very caring and gives us the message of "doing what is right"

Denis Leary .... Diego... Denis acts as a sarcastic jerk in his stand up, and here he gets laughs in the same way. He is the bad guy out to get the baby for his own herd and not caring about it's tribe at all. As you can guess, he does start to come around eventually, but will he ever fully change his tune? Watch and see!!!

Finally, my absolute favorite quote from this movie which stars...the Dodos! We all know they are extinct now b/c of their so ...stupid... and this scene shows you why! This quote is where it all starts but the whole scene is great.

[Manny, Sid and Diego see a melon and as they try to get it the dodos stop them]
Manny: Hey, can we have our melon back?
Dodo: No way! This is our private stockpile for the Ice Age. Subarctic temperatures will force us underground for a million billion years!
Manny: So you got three melons?
Dodo: If you weren't smart enough to plan ahead, then doom on you!

Visuals
The movie is very cartoony, so it's not meant to look real. However I think the animation and scenery was very well done. The characters all have their own personality drawn right in to them and yet they still look almost like the real animals. I've never seen a sloth, but the mammoth looks very much like what I picture, and so does the saber.

There are no very scary scenes so kids of all ages should be ok. When the action comes in the animation doesn't fail in the least. It's very fun to watch and all the humorous dialog just enhances the visuals even more.

Conclusion
I think this movie is hilarious, yet still has some very good lessons for the young ones. I was very excited to see Part 2 because all of these characters are just great :) Rent it or buy it today because the DVD features are great as well. Enjoy!!
