Any new mattress demands a new box string. However, IKEA recommends slatted foundations for the memory foam and latex mattresses. Rather than getting the regular slatted foundation that is the same depth as the typical box string, we decided to get the** IKEA Sultan Alsarp Foundation with Storage **to pair with our new*** IKEA Sultan Erfjord Natural Latex Mattress***. This particular foundation is 11 3/4" deep which is much taller than the typical box string. In addition, it has the typical birch slats for the mattress, but rather than being stationary, the slats are attached to a metal frame that can be lifted to access the storage space built into the deep foundation base. As with most other IKEA products, assembly is required. The assembly isn't difficult, but it is quite time consuming. It took me 3-4 hours to put together the two foundations required for a king mattress. The outside edges are covered with a nice white cotton cover.  Also, it takes some effort to lift the slat frame to access the storage underneath the heavy king-sized latex mattress, but that's okay since the space is mostly used for seasonal items. Overall, this foundation pairs well with our IKA Sultan Erfjord mattress and we are very pleased with it.
