We have had our Ikea Michael desk for about 6 years now, and it has held up exceptionally well. While we have no children, my husband and I do move frequently, so the desk is either partially or fully broken down and re-assembled several times since we've had it and has not suffered because of it.
Like all Ikea products, the wood is a press-board composite with a veneer over the top. The finish will bubble if liquids or moisture is left on for LONG periods of time (not just a spill of a drink---spill the drink and never clean it up), but I consider that to be a "common sense" thing and not something I'd ding Ikea for.
The drawer and keyboard holder slide smoothly and have never had a problem with them. The dry erase/magnet board is showing a bit of wear but it still holds up fine. I lost the tines that go along the top (to hold books, I suppose?) right after I got it.
Can be quite heavy to move if your'e moving it by yourself across the room. Get another person to help
