I bought the IKEA Mikael desk and add on unit right after finishing college for my first place.  It is a large desk that takes up a fair amount of space, but it was great for holding my computer and tons of books and notebooks for grad school.  I really liked the dry erase board to keep my to do list on and all the little file holders on the top and side.  Plenty of writing space also.

The downsides would be it takes forever to put together (of course I was doing it all by myself so that might make a difference) and it doesn't have any drawers for pens, pencils, etc.
