This film was adapted from the original I am Legend Novel written by Richard Matheson in 1954. This is the third film made from his novel the first was The Last Man on Earth in 1964 and then The Omega Man in 1971. It is a story about Lt. Colonel Robert Neville (Will Smith) an Army Virologist who believes he is the last unaffected human left on earth.

The lethal virus began as a re-engineered measles virus that was to be a cure for cancer but it mutated into a deadly virus. Those that didn't die were transformed into vampire like creatures that hid during the day in buildings. During the day Neville along with is dog Sam scour the streets of Manhattan for food and supplies. He has the reign of the city and even talks to mannequins he has placed all over. We also watch him looking at tapes of what happened when it all began back on December 25th, 2009. The story actually begins for us on September 5th., 2012

At night he barricades himself in his house with steel shutters on the windows that block the light from escaping and possibly giving away his presence to the vampires. He goes through a ritual of covering his scent so the vampires cannot track him back to his hideout.

He works on a cure to the deadly virus in his basement lab and uses vampires as guinea pigs to see if he can indeed find a cure. He auto broadcasts a message daily over his radio station he has built to see if anyone else can hear him and if so they are to come to New York at noon to meet him at the South Street Seaport so they can keep the human race going.

A lot of the action is intense as his dog wanders off into a building and he chases after Sam to keep her safe. He has his own arsenal of weapons to kill any vampires he comes across and also to hunt for food. Soon through a series of events he meets up with a woman Anna (Alice Braga ) and her son Ethan ( Charlie Tahan )who wind up rescuing him after he goes ballistic and tries to run over a bunch of vampires. His hiding place is no longer safe because during his rescue by the woman and her son the scent of humans is there for all the vampires to follow.

I won't spoil the rest of it for those who have not seen it, but it is a very intense film and although far fetched isn't that unbelievable in this age of chemical engineering viruses. This is along the lines of Castaway with Tom Hanks but much more action packed. Instead of talking to a soccer ball he talks to mannequins.

Bottom Line

Although I was disappointed in the ending of the movie it doesn't detract from it at all. The action and suspense are enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. It is very different from any Will Smith movie I have seen and I throughly enjoyed it. The ending does kind of leave enough to believe there could be a sequel although I doubt it. If you enjoy Will Smith movies and like action/suspense movies then this should be right up your alley.

I was disappointed in the end of the movie too. But I was enthralled in the rest of it. I thought it was very well shoot and directed and Will Smith did an outstanding job. Did this movie win an award or is it in next years awards?
