I Am Legend (2007) —
In anticipation to see this film, I had developed a sense of what it could be about. First and foremost, I believe this to be like any typical zombie movie. Having loved "28 Weeks Later", I hoped it was similar to that plot. I also felt like it would be more about trying to find a cure for these so-called zombies.The movie completely surprised me. I had expected more about surviving rather than a story about a man who has dealt with loss, who may be the only person left on the planet. You completely feel for Robert Neville Alone in a world full of infected beings and animals, such a state can make one go insane.
You fall in love with the dog, Sam. She is a main character; and although she doesn't say a word, her presence in the movie is important. She is Robert's best friend, possibly only friend. They struggle to survive in New York City as a plague has taken most or possibly the entire population.
Through flashbacks you get to know what Robert's life was like before the infection took control of their world. You see how much of a family man he was. As a scientist, you see what he does to try to correct the wrongs of society.
What thoroughly impressed me was the Christian context within the film. As a Christian and a horror movie fan, seeing references to God and faith is moving, especially in a horror flick. Through God, Robert sees his purpose, even if it takes a little bit of struggle to come to that realization. Even if you're not a Christian, you will find that this movie is worth the money. It was non-stop exciting, with some comedy, and also emotional moments. It has a little bit for everyone.
