A couple of months ago, I was playing baseball with my two boys in the backyard. At some point during the game, I must have either swung the bat too hard or threw the ball wrong because the next day and everyday since, I have had terrible pain in my neck and shoulder. I went to the doctor and although we don't yet know what is wrong, he recommended Ibuprofen for inflammation and Hydrocodone 5MG/500MG Pain Reliever for the pain. The Ibuprofen did its job but I wasn't very impressed with the Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen.

About Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen

According to Drugs.com, Hydrocodone (also known as Lortab) is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers and Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of Hydrocodone. The combination of Hydrocodone and acetaminophen is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Some side effects of Hydrocodone and acetaminophen may include feeling anxious, dizzy, or drowsy; mild nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation; headache, mood changes; blurred vision; ringing in your ears; or dry mouth.

My Experience

I had an x-ray that didn't show anything other than the Degenerative Disc Disease that I already knew I had. An MRI was scheduled but in the interim, I was to take the medication Hydrocodone. The doctor told me to be sure to take the medicine at night either before bed or when I was staying home because it was common to get dizzy or drowsy after taking it. I was nervous at first to take this because I have read about how addictive it could be. The pain was getting so bad that the Ibuprofen alone wasn't cutting it anymore. One night, I decided to put my fears aside and take one of the 5 mg pills. I waited and I waited but I didn't feel a single thing. The pain wasn't relieved nor did I have any side effects. Hmm. I figured that the dosage might have been a little low and the directions on the bottle said to take 1-2 pills as needed for pain. The next night I took two pills and within about twenty minutes, I started to feel lightheaded whenever I stood up and within about forty-five minutes, my mouth was very dry. I even felt a bit anxious and couldn't sleep. A little of the pain was relieved but not enough to outweigh the side effects that I had. Honestly, I am very surprised that this medication didn't work for me because I have heard and read so many things about how good of a pain reliever it was supposed to be. I recently had my MRI and I am awaiting the results. I hope that once I actually know what is wrong, the doctor will be able to prescribe a more appropriate pain medication for me.

My Final Viewpoint

Hydrocodone 5MG/500MG Pain Reliever didn't relieve enough pain for me to continue to take it on a regular basis. The side effects outweighed the pain relief. For now, I will continue to take Ibuprofen and use the heating pad until the doctor can come up with a diagnosis and a way to properly relieve the pain. Due the side effects that I experienced and the pain relief that I didn't, I am going with a 2 star rating.

Vicodin and Lortab (not Loratab) are the same medications, different BRAND names. Both come in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg and 10 mg doses with acetominophen. There are also alot of the same drug combinations with different brand names, such as Lorcet, Anexsia, Vicodin ES, Norco and others.Vicoprofen is hydrocodone with ibuprofen.

Hope ya feel all better even though the medicine is not that good. :>

I was also prescribed this medicine for 2 herniated disks and I also felt little to no relief. You'd think there would be something out there that could relieve the pain without the side effects! I hope you MRI comes back positive = no major injury. Good luck and take care!

A lot of people have told me how good Aleve is. I definitely have to go buy some. Thank you for your well wishes. :)

oops -- meant to reply to LoveisJoy. :P

I was prescribed hydrocodone in the past after a back surgery. I only took them for a week and then switched to Aleve. That seemed to work for me. Hope you're feeling better soon. :)

Actually, I wasn't on anything else. It never really bothered me much. I do know it works for most people and I figured it was a low dose so I doubled it. That is when I got all the side effects but hardly any relief. Thanks for caring. :)

MikeMaroon wrote on Aug 10, 2008 at 9:42PM

Sounds like you just needed a higher dose. Sorry about your degenerative disc disease, and I hope that doesn't bother you too much. :) Probably you were on something else already for that and the Loratab was too low a dose. Having been in the medical field for years, I can tell you Loratab works very well for most folks, except those with a high tolerance for pain-killers. I sure hope you find something that helps. A nice person like you shouldn't have to be in pain!!!

You're welcome Laurie.....I think you are good with the Loratab (maybe a higher dose though)and Ibuprophen.. I say that because I have taken 2 different ones at the same time and by doing so I can alternate every 2 hours and not take a larger than safe dose of each but get very good relief......I am thinking about you and sending good thoughts...;)

I have heard a lot of good things about Aleve. I am definitely going to go buy some tonight and see if it helps. Thank you. They haven't tested me for fibromyalgia yet. I guess they are waiting for the MRI results to come back first.

LisaCarey wrote on Aug 10, 2008 at 2:26PM

I cut the amount of vicodin in half -- 1 tab instead of 2, and that helps on some of the side effects as well as eating something with it (not fruit it needs to be something like 1 slice bread with PB on it) You could try that for some of the side effects. Have they tested for fibromyalgia? Hope you get it settled soon! Also, try Aleve instead 3 tabs do wonders.

In response to kid-kansas's comment from Aug 10, 2008 at 2:10AM:

Thank you for clarifying that. Maybe I would do better with the Vicodin since I am taking Ibuprofin separately anyway. I hope I get relief soon too. :(

kid-kansas wrote on Aug 10, 2008 at 2:10AM

Hydrocodone with Acetaminophen is Loratab...Hydrocodone with Ibuprophen is Vicodin ....5/500mg is a low dose and I can take them like candy. I now take 10/500mg Loratabs and they help and no dry mouth...Good luck and I hope you get relief soon Laurie...;)

I don't like this stuff. I don't take anything narcotic because I have all the side effects and none of the relief.

Yes, Vicodin .. I did read that somewhere. Scary stuff! I have no idea why it didn't work for me. Weird.

Fardreamer wrote on Aug 9, 2008 at 8:58PM

Oh those nasty side effects1 Hope you find something more effective and, of course, safer.

bkovacs wrote on Aug 9, 2008 at 8:42PM

I believe that hydrocodone is the generic name for Vicodin. It is usually more powerful than codeine but not as powerful as morphine. Quite a few people have similar reactions to yours but it definitely works for me. Nice review!
