I can't resist anything sold in bulk, especially if it comes from Costco. What's not to like about a box of 168 diapers, especially if I can pick it up at the same time as my paper towels and huge box of Lara bars? Unfortunately, quite a few things if the diapers are Huggies.
The first thing I noticed about Huggies was how oddly they fit my daughter's body. She weighed about 20 pounds at the time, so shouldn't the 16-28 pound weight range on the size threes have meant a perfect fit? Far from perfect, the diapers were tight in the waist but voluminous in the back. When she walked around, the waist band slid lower and lower below her belly and rode up higher in back, even giving her a wedgie when dry. When wet, they were even worse because all that excess material sagged between her legs. If I had panties that fit like this, I would throw them away. The odd shape also caused leaks due to the shifting around of the extra material in the bottom. Sometimes the diaper would shift so far the side, it wouldn't be in place to absorb anything and I'd have a soggy toddler to put in the bathtub.
All babies are shaped differently, and some might even be shaped like baby-shaped Huggies. But even if they are a perfect fit for your child, I still don't think they are a good product. Other adventures in sogginess occurred when my daughter sat down with a wet diaper and the wetness all squished back out, soaking her pants and making her skin chafed and rashy. The interior does a horrible job at moisture-wicking, and I felt constantly anxious that I wouldn't catch her immediately after she wet and she would be stuck with soiled clothes and yet another rash. I think I checked her diaper 20 or 30 times a day while we used up our box of Huggies. When I think about how poorly they absorb over time, I get downright angry with the company. I think it's very telling that Huggies makes an overnight diaper with a great reputation, but their regular diaper utterly fails at night. My daughter doesn't even drink much at night and has never needed a special overnight diaper, but I don't think she ever woke up on dry sheets after wearing Huggies to bed. Eventually, I just bought another box of Pampers and put her in those to sleep - or to wear on a long car ride, or any time we were going to be out of the house for awhile. Huggies were simply not trustworthy.
Some people say Huggies are better for boys. Others say that diaper companies change their designs so often, it's worth trying them again from time to time. Again, every baby is different and parents will prefer different diapers for them. It might be worthwhile to try Huggies yourself, but I definitely urge you not to buy 168 of them the first time.
