My son loves the movie Cars. Actually, scratch that. My son is OBSESSED with the movie Cars. Everything in his life revolves around that movie - from bed sheets to pillows, from toys to clothes, his life is all about the movie Cars. When we found a 12 inch bicycle for my son that was decked out as a Lightning McQueen and Cars-themed bike, we were thrilled!
What It Is
In short, this is a bicycle that is meant for kids aged 3-5 and can be found in 12 inch and 16 inch options. Although I was told by a friend that it was available in a 14 inch option, I have yet to actually see that option online or in the store.
The bike itself is red and includes a padded bumper between the handle bars and a bag in front to carry all the essentials. The subtle and not-so-subtle references to Cars is amusing, especially for the Cars-loving recipient! If you're concerned about safety, they have you covered. You can also purchase matching helmets and padding.
The Good
This truly is the perfect gift for that Cars lover in your life. The seat is easily adjusted without a wrench, and it rides like a dream. It's a sturdy option - my son proved this by riding it into a few trees, a few bushes and one parked car. The bike is relatively unscathed despite the tumbles.
It's also the perfect size for a beginning cyclist. Regardless of whether your child is a little on the short or tall side, you'll have a bike that best fits his or her needs.
The Cons
Unfortunately, everything has to have a con or two, and this bike is no exception. There have been previous reports of the chain coming off, but we have yet to experience this problem. However, the first thing to fall apart was the little decorative bag in front. After just a few pieces of chalk, the bag was already ripping at the seams. For the price of the bike (averaging around $70), this issue really shouldn't be occurring.
Worth Noting
It's important to note that the brakes are in the pedals, meaning to break the child just has to rotate the wheels counter clockwise. It does NOT feature a handle bar brake. Some parents think their children will have trouble with the foot brakes. My son has had no issue, but to those who prefer handle bar brakes, this is most likely not the bike to you.
Summary
However cute and durable this bike may be, the price tag and sub-par accessories (i.e. the bag) may make you double think getting this bike. This will make a great bike for a toddler for a good 2-3 years. Whether or not you want to spend money on the brand is up to you.
