This can be a great alternative in the right situation. For example I wouldn't use hotwire for a honeymoon since you have no control over where you get and it is non refundable so that is a case where it is worth it to spent a little extra to have control of where you end up. If you are looking for a quick get away or have a busy trip and are a flexible, easygoing person this can be a great deal. We got a fantastic deal last time on a very large room and could not have been more pleased. Some cities/dates I've noticed that it isn't that significant of savings. Make sure you check comparable websites with discounts that tell you where you are staying since you need to be getting a good enough deal to make the idea of going in blind worth it. I've never used it for anything other than a hotel but I've heard good things about using it for a car.
