El Convento is a true luxury boutique hotel in every sense of the word. A 300+ year old convent turned into beautiful accommodations, marvelously well kept. The staff is especially helpful and friendly. The location is perfect if you want to be in old San Juan. Old San Juan is like a European city. The cobblestones streets are a gorgeous purple color and the restaurants are excellent. El Convento is across the street from a pretty plaza and a very old Cathedral which draws both locals and tourists alike for prayer services. The hotel offers a nightly wine and cheese buffet which is complementary and overlooks the cathedral. It was a lovely way to meet fellow guests. The pool is small, only a plunge pool, and though I didn't use it, I was told that it could get crowded at night with the children of guest families. You will need a car to travel to beaches, the rainforest, and other areas you may wish to explore. Luckily, the hotel has parking, because parking on the street would be like parking in NYC. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was always delicious and a pleasure. For a small meal, the tapas bar was also terrific. Pass on the mojitos though. They're not made with shaved ice, just sugary mix poured over rocks. Although the standard room was small, it was highly serviceable.

Dining: Short Walk, The Parrot Club, one of the most popular restaurants downtown, doesn't take reservations. Show up early, put your name down, and then walk around and shop.
