The Carmel is a cozy older hotel, centrally located in downtown Santa Monica. One block to Santa Monica Pier...one block to Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place, steps away from municipal parking garage with good rates. Hotel offers valet parking as well. The Hotel Carmel locatation allowed us to walk to nearby restautants, the famous pramenade filled with shops and more, We were also able to walk 1 block to the ocean. Not flasy, older charm and comfortable. Don't expect too many ammenities. This small hotel doesnt offer them. I will stay there again.... read full review »

Hotel 6 would be better

The Hotel Carmel is so disgusting. Being a business traveller I am realistic about hotels that might be older, but this hotel is disgustingly old and dirty. To start, don't be fooled by the lobby - it seems they put all of their cleaning and upgrading of the hotel into the lobby. We were on the second floor, so we took the stairs. The malodorous stench that hit us in the face when we got to the second floor reminded me of an old folks home that hadn't been cleaned. It smelled of urine and filth. Excellent Location

Hotel Carmel has a great location - 2 - 4 blocks from the beach, famous pier, civic auditorium, promonade and farmer's market. It is an older hotel, but is kept clean and maintained. Pleasant staff. I spent 2 nights and didn't need a car.

Recreational Attactions: Short Drive, The Getty Villa is about 6-7 miles up the coast. I was able to take a direct metro bus to the Getty Villa ($2.50- a deal). The stop is a couple of blocks away; the bus comes every 35- 45 minutes. Get your free tickets in advance for the Villa and remeber to bring them with you. There may not be any at the gate.

Nice but small rooms

This is a nice old european style hotel. Rooms are clean and staff is accomodating. Rooms are on the small side, not much room for luggage, no coffee pot but had ironing board and iron. An overall good experience but a little pricy for what you get.

Shopping: Short Walk, 1. Only a few blocks from the Santa Monica Pier and the ocean. 2. One block from the major shopping area.

It was clean, very centrally located, lots of amenities (healthclubs, restruants of all kinds and clubs) near by. The bed was comfortabel and the staff accomodating and friendly.

Entertainment: Short Walk, Loytts of restruants , health clubs and yoga places close by.
