My youngest son picked the main dish for dinner one night last night when I was in a time crunch. His pick was Hormel Turkey Breast & Gravy. I also got some Simply Potatoes mashed potatoes and some broccoli to round out the meal.

Typically I cook my own turkey breasts in the crock pot, but the oldest has gone to college. Cooking for two is taking some adjustment. A big turkey breast is a lot for two people, so I've not done a crock pot turkey lately.

Though I like Hormel "ready in 4 minutes" meats, I've stayed away from the turkey. I got frozen turkey once, and it was more like turkey bologna slices in gross gravy. That cured me on quick turkey.

The Hormel meat main dishes could not be easier. You just take off the paper cover and microwave for 4 minutes. Don't vent. Just stick it in and zap it. That's all.

I was a little concerned that the turkey slices were round like bologna. That brought to mind the icky turkey bologna slices from days gone by.

Fortunately, Hormel does a nice job with the turkey. It is white meat and tender. The size and shape reminds me of bologna, but the taste is like real turkey.

There are only 5 slices of turkey. At bologna size or close, that's not a lot of meat. It's fine for two, but I don't think it would go much further. I only ate one. My son ate three slices. He's not a big meat eater in general. The dog was thrilled to get the extra slice.

The gravy was decent. It has a little more thickener than I like. I'd say it is cornstarch but light. The taste is just a tad sweet. I'm not so keen on cornstarch for meat gravy. Flour is better but harder to work with.

Costwise, this runs up there with a small amount of meat compared to cooking a turkey breast. On the other hand, it only takes 4 minutes and is good. I'm not so likely to cook a full breast and have so much left over now, so this means we can still have turkey now and then.

I'm sure I'll continue to buy Hormel turkey breasts especially when my younger son has a taste for turkey. I know that's better healthwise than many choices. The package says it's 130 calories if the pack is divided three ways (off to divide five slices three ways) and total fat is 5%. Sodium is high at 48%. Bummer on that. Looks like Hormel could cut back on the salt a bit.

Hormel is salty but most packaged foods are. Luckily none of us has high blood pressure so we can eat this stuff and not worry too much. Except that I blow up like a beach ball from the water retention. Ugh.

I like Hormel but they do seem to put more salt in than the other brands...;)

I use this once in a while, the family likes it. Great review.

With a bigger family, I would still suggest a breast in the crock pot or even oven baking. That's super easy and more meat for the buck. With two of us here now, this is a nice option. I appreciate that and I'm sure others do too.
