What is SPAM?
Well it is not what you get in your emails! That is for sure. I was surprised recently to find out how many people have never eaten Spam. I love the canned meat and have been eating it for years. It is a staple in my home especially during hurricane season.
Spam comes in the following varieties: SPAM Classic, SPAM Lite, SPAM Low Sodium, SPAM Garlic, SPAM Bacon, SPAM Turkey, SPAM Hickory Smoke, SPAM with Cheese, SPAM Golden Honey Grail, SPAM Hot & Spicy, SPAM Spread and SPAM Singles.
So What Can You Do With SPAM?
There is no end to the things you can do with SPAM. We take it with us on fishing trips because it is so portable and convenient. You can use it in any recipe that calls for ham.
My favorite way to eat SPAM is diced up into cubes, tossed into a hot, cast iron skillet until lightly browned, set aside to cool. Scramble my eggs, place them in a skillet, add SPAM and top with shredded cheese. Fluff the eggs a bit with the spatula until the eggs are firm. Fold in half, flip over and cook to until no longer runny. Serve it with grits and toast. Enjoy!
FYI: You can go to the website and compete in recipe contests, obtain recipes, join the fan club, buy SPAM stuff and so much more.
Want to Live Longer?
This is from a newsletter on the spam.com website:
Want to live longer? Happier? Ushi Okushima, who lives on the island of Okinawa in the North Pacific, credits SPAM luncheon meat for her many happy years. "Yes, that's the secret to longevity," she replied when interviewed by biker Dan Buettner, a Minnesotan who travels to distant parts of the world, sending back reports to school kids across the nation who track his every move via the Internet. Okinawans tend to live to a ripe old age, and Dan set out to find out why. He talked with a number of elderly islanders, including Ushi. The result? Over one million school kids got his message about SPAM lover Ushi and other aged citizens of Okinawa. How's that for building a base of future SPAM consumers...and just think how long they'll be enjoying it!
Dan was able to speak to Ushi through an interpreter (she speaks Japanese; Okinawa was Japanese until World War II). The following is a quote from Dan's interview with Ushi from the Update Teaching Guide of Classroom Connect-Dan's organization:
My (Dan's) favorite advice came from 99-year-old Ushi Okushima. Ushi wakes every morning at 5 a.m. and walks barefoot to the beach to do her exercises.
Then, after a breakfast of miso soup, egg, and vegetables, she changes into her gardening clothes and hikes to her garden. In the afternoon she takes a two-hour nap before returning to her garden for another couple of hours of work. ln the evening, she socializes with her friends who come to take tea on her porch.
"So" I asked her, "what is the secret of longevity?" She looked me squarely in the eyes. "It's mugwort wine," she said.
"I make it myself and have a cup of it every night before I go to bed."
"Anything else?" I pressed.
She thought for a minute, and then began to describe a meat product that comes in a little blue can, which she mixes into her Goya champru stir-fry.
"SPAM!" I cried.
"Yes, that's the secret to longevity," she replied.
"SPAM is made in my home state of Minnesota!" I said excitedly.
"Fine" she said. "You send me SPAM and I'll send you mugwort wine and we'll both live to be 100!"
We sealed the deal with a handshake.
Who Eats The Most SPAM?
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin makes no bones about it: "We are the SPAM champions of planet Earth. In Hawaii we consume five million pounds of SPAM every year. Five. Million. Pounds."
So I guess the word is out about SPAM!
