Spam has been around longer than I can remember and it was one of the things my parents bought and fed to us for lunch growing up. I can't say I love the taste but it is not actually too bad either.

What is it and who eats it

Spam is a ground meat by product of sorts, yep just like hot dogs which most of us love. Basically it is pork and pork by products and it is ground up in a medium coarse grind, placed in the cans and sealed, then it is cooked in the can. To me it is a spicy ground ham that one must acquire a taste for.

After I grew up I never bought it much but sometimes I would get it and slice it thick and grill it outside in the summer. When my wife and I got married in Hawaii I learned that it is very popular there. We wanted pancakes one morning and walked 2 blocks to the McDonald's, we were greeted and asked "Would you like to try our Spam and Eggs this morning?" I turned to my wife and she at me and we thought we had heard wrong. But I looked up and sure enough there it was on the menu! WOW.

We saw it on many menus throughout our visit there and at one it was served with rice. So I figured I would try this Hawaiian breakfast since I eat it sometimes and too my surprise it was actually pretty good, both with eggs and with the rice. When fried it is pretty good I must admit that, but cold...no way forget it!

Spam got its start in 1937 and was tauted as the meat that needed no refrigeration by its maker Hormel. It actually started 11 years earlier and was called "Hormel Spiced Ham" but it never really caught on so in 1937 they changed the name and it took off from there. In the 70's a Smoke Flavored Spam came about and in 1986 a lower sodium version was offered. In the 90's Spam breakfast strips were introduced along with Spam Lite.

Bottom Line

I say Spam is an acquired taste and I stand by that too. It is great fried and in Hawaii you can get it on many menus, it is also more popular in the south. I ate it as a kid and I am still walking so it won't kill ya. My girls actually love Spam and they always have it around the house. My oldest daughter bakes it with BBQ sauce and her kids love it as well.

Note: I tried to find the nutritional facts on Spam and even their corporate website doesn't have it.

My Mom just threatened to let Dad cook ;) He cooked 2 things back then. Popcorn in a frying pan-Sans Lid! and his version of onion soup....Onions, water salt and pepper! ;)

My mother would threaten us with Spam. But then considering her cooking skill, it wasn't much of a threat.

I've always loved SPAM. I used to eat fried SPAM and eggs and toast for breakfast. I love SPAM sandwiches (straight out of the can) and I love it fried on a sandwich with mustard. :)

OMG...I despise Spam!!!LOL. My mother went through a Spam period when I was a teen. Spam and eggs; Spam and grits; fried Spam and biscuits; Spam sandwiches. Oh...and the occasional Treet. If I never see another slice of that pink, gelatinous nightmare, it will be all right with me. Glad you enjoy it, though. :-)

well the second day we wanted a simple breakfast and the McDonald's was up the street from the hotel, so we went! We also went to a Walmart while there to buy stuff for the kids, it was a lot cheaper than the other places....lol I wish I got money for my wisecracks I would be set for life ;-)

I never had Spam but I do have a question.

How do you go all the way to Hawaii (my dream vacation) to get married and end up at McDonald's for breakfast eating Spam & Eggs? lol

I swear you should be a comedian...you crack me up!!!

I tried to get the nutritional stuff and couldn't find it. Last time I had Spam was in Hawaii. Good point though George I know it has too be up there in salt content. Ron

I can take it or leave it, just depends on my mood. ;)

I would think there is about a teaspoon of salt a slice for those who are watching their sodium not a good choice. ;>

Join the Spam club (-: Yes. It is popular in the South as well as the knock off Treat meat in a can.

joyjoy wrote on Jan 10, 2008 at 5:29PM

I grew up eating both Spam and Treet.
