* Opaque black liquid with reddish tinge when held to the light. Short dense tan cap of foam.
* Nose is olfactory cornucopia of coffee, burnt toffee, molasses and roasted malt.
* Faint, sweet malt foretaste transforms into dry, mildly acidic dark grain flavors, dark (baker's) chocolate and molasses.
* Finish is complex, intense and very long.
* Body is mostly full, silky-smooth with some astringent grittiness at the end. Carbonation is minimal.
Synhopsis:
Whew! Like this beer or not, you have no choice but to take notice of it. It is a complex melange of flavors and mouthfeels. It's faintly sweet in the beginning, dry and astringent at the end; smooth and velvety across the palate, but chewy and gritty after you swallow.
Altogether, this beer seems a bit rough around the edges, but it seems to work in this style. If you don't like big, dark, aggressive flavors this one is not for you. And keep in mind it is 9.4% a.b.v.
