Hoot

2006

Rated PG for mild bullying & brief language

Based on the book, Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen.

Synopsis of Hoot:

Hoot is a cute family film about a young boy who finds himself transplanted from Montanna to Coconut Cove, Florida. As the new kid in town, he's having trouble making friends and  becomes the target of a school bully. Eventually he builds friendships with two kids as they bond in a fight to save some baby owls. The kids have to take on land developers, politicians and seemingly clueless cops to fight the destruction of a natural habitat for a Mother Paula's Pancake House to come to town.

Cast of Hoot:

This is not a big name film but there is a fun cameo role by Jimmy Buffett, as Mr. Ryan, the science teacher. The film also stars Luke Wison, from Legally Blonde and Alex & Emma, as a clueless cop. Youth actors include Logan Lerman who won a Leading Young Actor Award and Brie Larson who was nominated for the same.

Genre of Hoot:

Hoot is tagged as a Adventure, Comedy and Family film. I would give it a slightly above average rating as an adventure for kids. I would have to give it just an average or below for comedy. The funniest parts of the movie revolve around Luke Wilson's bumbling cop character who falls asleep on the job and has his cruiser windows painted black, followed by his demotion to driving a cruiser that's a few notches below an ice cream cart. Don't worry, he gets to redeem himself in the end. I do give this film high ratings as a family film for clean fun and positive messages. While there was no profanity in this movie, there were several "Oh my God" exclamations that I would have preferred to do without.

Themes of Hoot:

Hoot has several positive themes including kids can make a difference, making personal sacrifices to help others and the consequences of development. It also makes a good point that we often won't know that animals are there unless we are quiet and still, especially if they are nocturnal.

Interesting Fact About the Production of Hoot:

Hoot was filmed in Florida between July 6th and September 2nd, 2005.  When the devastating Hurricane Katrina hit on August 25th, the cast and crew had to be relocated.

Bonus of Hoot:

If your're a parrot head fan, there's plenty of Jimmy Buffet in this movie. Besides his cameo role, Buffett was a co-producer and the movie is enhanced with lots of Buffett music including Wondering Where the Lions Are, Barefootin', Floridays and Werewolves of London.

My Viewpoint:

This is not an over the top entertainment movie but it is a cute movie for families that says "Good guys can win."

hadn't heard of it before either, but love Jimmy Buffet so I may have to see it for that reason alone. And they kids may really enjoy it.

I am a big fan of the writer/columnist who wrote the book on which this film is based. I've read a few of his more for grown-up books, but not "Hoot."
