Having a son with a learning disability in reading can be quite a challenge. He gets help from school and is making progress now, but last year was tough for him and I needed a way to get him reading over the summer.
Hooked on Phonics seemed like the perfect solution. He enjoyed making off the books and lessons as we completed them together and as his chart filled up with stickers, he was building his vocabulary, learning to be a reader, and working towards a bonus prize fro completing the entire program.
The nice thing about Hooked on Phonics is that it offers several ways to get the information across, which makes it valuable for several different types of learners. The cue cards seem to work best for my son. He would learn the words first with these and then when they came up in context within the books we were reading, he could easily identify them. As he got better at this, he was actually reading for longer periods and felt more confident in his ability to read.
I have to admit that I didn't plunk down the money for the set though. I was given a used set by a friend. But I also know they are available for rent through the local library, so you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to teach your child to read.
