Winter used to be a dreaded time in our household.  We have a wall heater and a dial thermostat that didn't work right.  I would set it to a temperature and it would keep going as long as the heater was on well past the setting.  So I definitely couldn't leave the heater on while I wasn't home or worse gone for the weekend if I wanted to keep money in my bank account.  And my poor cats would freeze if I left during the weekend.

So my boyfriend and I decided that we were getting an electronic thermostat that we could program and feel comfortable leaving on while we were away.  We went with Honeywell because that's what my huge office uses and it works great and it easy to use.

This thermostat can be used on gas, fuel oil or electric furnaces, central heating or air, or just air or just heat.  It displays the time, day of the week, temperature and period number.

Energy-Saving Schedule: There are four (what are called) periods.  I set the system for an hour before I wake up, so the house is nice and toasty and I'm not doing the cold dance while I get dressed.  Then there's a setting for when you leave the house, warm enough so the cats don't freeze.  The third period is for when you return home.  Or like the morning period I set it for a half hour before I usually get home.  The last period is the night setting.  Since we have nice warm comforters on our bed and our three animals all sleep on the bed or under the covers (Barkley's a blanket hog) we don't set it too high.

These settings are used Monday through Friday.  There is a separate program mode for Saturday and Sunday.

This thermostat was really easy to install.  It went right in the place of our existing system and used the same wires.  If you're worried about a new system with an old appliance don't worry, my heater is ancient and it's compatible.

This electronic, programmable thermostat is well priced at $41 after taxes (California).  You can buy it in the store or online from Home Depot.

I am so glad I bought this thermostat.  Being able to set the thermostat is a big bonus so you don't build up a huge bill or freeze during the winter.  Now it's warm enough for the chocolate shell sauce that hardens on ice cream not to harden in the bottle.  That's how cold it got in our house!  Now we can leave for the weekend and not worry about the cats freezing and we don't have to wear sweaters and beanies around the house.  Thanks Honeywell!

These are great. They do help save on the heating bill. I wish I'd invested a bit more to get the programmable. It's on my "to buy" list now.
