The Honda Element is a type of suburaban/rural hybrid design. The reasonable fuel economy mixed with ample cargo capacity sets it in the mini van category with some exceptions.

Pro:The real advantages to the Element are in the simplicity of dsesign. A utilitarian interior fits in well with its rural character. The floor is a tough plastic that you can move and slide boxes on without a lot of concern to damage. Mud wipes up with a damp towel. There are not a lot of frills to break or damage.

The engine and driveline are also simple. The adequate but certainly not overpowered engine is quite and seems to be of Honda reliablity. Fuel economy, while not startling is good enough to make it an easy choice over a small truck for daily commuting where you need the occasional space for hauling a large item. The driveline bonus for people in northern climates is the AWD option. For a slight fuel penalty, you can be sure you are going to make it home on those snowy nights.

Con: First, it isn't passenger friendly for more than 2 people, the driver and right seat passenger. Climbing into the back is not a problem except that you are at the mercy of the front seat driver or passenger to allow you to get out. A front door has to be open for the rear door to open. It is a little bit of a hassle if you are in the back seat and alone in the car and want to get out. The easiest way to get out is to move into the front seat and get out through the front door. Same problem if the back seat passenger arrives at the car alone and wants to get in and close the door. You have to close your rear door, then figure out how to close the front door.

The ride is not exactly comfortable. The suspension is a little mushy and tends to get bouncy on a rough road. The rear seat passengers are sittling close to the rear wheels and can take a real beating. Again the front seats provide an much more comfortable ride.

Recommendation: Overall the Element serves well for anyone wanting a lower priced vehicle with the ability to haul around bulky items and not break the budget.
