Fresh out of college with an entry-level position in a non-profit organization in a big city, I was in the market for a reliable, fuel-efficient vehicle that I could afford. So, my dad and I went tire-kicking. I looked at Hyundais, Mazdas, and Fords, comparing everything from gas mileage to reliability. My dad, who wrote car reviews for the local newspaper at the time, was a great resource for making my decision.
I finally narrowed my search down to the Honda Civic or the Hyundai Elantra. Though my payments would have been significantly lower with the Hyundai, I decided on the CIvic in the end for a number of reasons.
First of all, being a woman, I of course, was pretty concerned with how "cute" the vehicle was. The Civic won out there without a doubt. It has a very sleek, modern look that is very appealing. Another bonus is that the 2006 model is the first year the Civic came out with the new look.
Secondly, as my dad pointed out, the CIvic will hold its value so much better than the Hyundai. With the depreciation rate of vehicles, you might as well go for one that holds its value at least a little better.
The only thing my mom was concerned about was safety, so she was very excited to hear about the excellent crash ratings the Civic touts.
The final selling point was the gas mileage. Although I don't have much of a commute to work at all, I travel quite often on the weekends so I really appreciate the excellent interstate gas mileage. I recently took a road trip to Oxford, Mississippi on one tank of gas!
I would reccommend this car to just about anyone. It's perfect for a single working twenty-something, but my brother who is also a 2006 Honda Civic owner and has a one-year old will attest that it is a great family car as well.
