The 1991 Honda Civic is a great first car to won. The gas mileage is great (40+ on the highway) and the design is simple making repairs easy. Also the engine is long lasting (200k+ and still going) as long as you perform basic maintanence. I have never had to take the car into the shop and all the repairs were completed in a garage. The only negative is this car is often stolen. Consequently my car has been broken into 5 times. Make sure you have an alarm or a deadman switch in it.
