Homescan —

I signed up for Homescan about three months ago.  Since then, I've been asciduously scanning in virtually everything we've purchased.

Then, today, scanning in a large grocery shopping trip, using their reference cards for the vegetables, and spending about an hour doing it, I got to thinking "why the hell am I doing this for them without adequate compensation?"  These suckers are not even paying minimum wage.

AC Nielsen and its subsidiary HomeScan are large, for profit corporations.  They sell their research findings to high-paying clients, but they're using essentially slave-labor for the basis of their research.  Every time we scan in a shopping trip, we are "rewarded" with points that equal mills on the dollar in terms of the "gifts" that are offered as incentive.  I think we're also entered into some mysterious sweepstakes (what are the chances of winning that? yeah, right).  Bottom line, unless you want to donate your time to a for-profit corporation, it's not worth it.

If they were paying a straight cash amount for each item scanned, it would make some sort of sense, but unloading junk on us at exorbinant rates is nuts, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sending everything back.  I've had it.

Eric

I agree 100% with your review. I found the scanner to be cumbersome. And then scanning was VERY time consuming considering we do alot of grocery shopping at once. It is bad enough that it takes 15-30min to put away groceries. If I have meat to put away then takes even longer. So it wasn't worth it honestly. They need to find another system.

Good review. After being enrolled in the program for a while I also realized it was not worth the time/effort.

yep i did it to for awhile and just like you finally had enough funny no one ever seems to win the sweepstakes maybe its time these companies are reported.

I worked for homescan, and although I might agree that some of the rewards might not be what some people hope for, no one's putting a gun to your head to participate. If you do not like it, stop bitching and send it back, it's that simple. And with regards to the sweepstakes, there's less than 170,000 people in total on the panel (give or take), and I had seen my share of $1000 american express gift check winners, as well as $500 winners too. I can tell you this you have a better chance at winning those than the lottery, and all you have to do to be entered is do the normal participation of the panel anyway, nothing else. And for the older people that have a lot of time on their hands, they seem to really enjoy the program. So don't shit on something just because you don't like it. If it were that bad it wouldnt have existed for over 20 years.

I did this Homescan thing once before, years ago, and found it much more time-consuming than rewarding in any way-- and I do enjoy things like online surveys which sometimes aren't so financially rewarding. I'm expecting a scanner to arrive today. In reading your review, I remember why I quit doing it before. You make excellent points.

Top it off with A.C. Nielsen laying off hundreds of American employees in Oldsmar Florida and replacing them with Pakistanis on work Visas...I'm done with them too!

Eric,

I was so glad you read your review. I always look for reviews of this "work from home" or "earn points" websites. This sounded too good to be true and while they are obviously giving you something in return for your work it doesn't seem worth my time.

Have a great day!
