After a long ride here to Indiana I was taken back many years to when I drove a truck for a living. Back then after 10 hours driving if you had leather seats you arse was sore and irritated from sweating. A lot of guys buy sheepskin to lay on their seats to reduce or even eliminate the sweating problem of long rides. Being the Redneck innovator I am I went to Walmart to see if I could find something I could use to do the same thing.

Nothing made in our world is limited to just one way to use it and I found what I thought would be perfect. It lacked a way to fasten it however so my brain went into THINK MODE and I grabbed a wide pair of shoe laces and a packet of dye to finish my little project off. You see the Chair Cushion I found was beige and just stood out too much for my tastes.

These are 16" x 16" and 2" thick, with a removable inner foam pad and a rubber backing to prevent slipping. I got a package of Rit Dye (Navy Blue) and a pair of 54" shoe strings that were extra wide.

Normally you would use these on your dining room chairs but I was planning on using it on Lil' Blue to keep me from sweating on those long rides. I won't go through the process of dying the cushion cover as that is another review but I got it dyed and had my daughter sew on the shoe strings which I cut in half. They were sewed on each of the 4 corners and I attached the cushion to my bike by running the front under the frame rails and the back under the seat support bracket.

My motorcycle seat is 16" wide and 18" long so it fit almost perfect with just a small section front and back not covered. After getting it attached I took Lil' Blue for a nice long ride to test out my new invention and was pleasantly surprised at how much difference it made. I did not sweat and the extra 2" of cushion made for a very enjoyable ride.

Bottom Line

When you get old like me you need that extra comfort too be able to tolerate things most take for granted. I now have a more comfortable seat and the total cost was $10 plus a little time out of my day and it was well worth it. Sheepskin is expensive and the cheapest piece I found big enough for my seat was in the $40+ range.

With a little thought and patience I was able to accomplish a more comfortable ride for 1/4 of the price. Life is what you make of it and anyone can accomplish things if they only use their heads for something other than decorating their shoulders!

it's funny, i think every time my dad gets on his bike he finds something else to do to make it more fun or comfortable. I think he just likes tinkering with it!

My Dad always told me "It builds character" with every life challenge. I always wondered when I would ever finish building it!

I enjoy finding ways to solve problems, Dad always said use it or lose it and my brain is small enough...lol ;)

Very cool idea. I have a habit of adding cushions to everything. You can never be too comfortable :)

What a great idea!

Glad I'm not the only one who does stuff like this. Pain is often the mother of invention at my house too!
