Home Run Inn Grilled Vegetable Pizza —

Home Run Inn Pizza is a Chicago "institution" produced for years by generations of an Italian family who have steadfastly resisted the temptation to strive for a low-fat, low-sodium version of the dish which made them famous.  No tofu for THEM, Mom!  As far as the folks at Home Run Inn are concerned, if you're gonna eat pizza, then you're gonna eat PIZZA, Gol darn it!  This same philosophy holds true for the frozen Home Run Inn Pizzas available in stores.  Now that that has been said, however, it is nice to know that even in PizzaLand, there are healthier options.  Behold: the Home Run Inn Grilled Vegetable Pizza.

An eight ounce "personal" sized pizza is assumed to have two servings, which may not be farfetched if the pizza is eaten as part of a balanced meal along with a tossed salad or light dessert.  A single serving contains 330 calories with 130 calories from fat.  There are 15 grams total fat, four and a half grams saturated fat, zero trans fat, 15 mg. cholesterol, 720 mg. sodium, 36 grams total carbs, two grams dietary fiber, three grams sugars and 13 grams protein.  Vitamins and minerals are not shabby at all, weighing in at 10% (D.V.) Vitamin A, 20% Vitamin C, 20% calcium, and 15% iron.  This pizza, draped in a generous layer of cheese, sliced mushrooms, red and green peppers, and red onions, delivers a great taste which will not disappoint those Chicagoans who have come to expect the best from Home Run Inn.  It IS pizza, after all, and therefore bound to be rich but ...

YOU COULD DO WORSE ...

Home Run Inn Sausage and Pepperoni Pizza

Unless you are a devoted vegetarian, don't try to deny the inevitable -- you're going to love this pizza.  The thick layers of cheese, sausage, and pepperoni are pure decadence.  Wait until you get a load of that nutritional 411 on the package!  A single serving (half a 9 oz. pizza) contains 420 calories with 190 calories from fat.  There are 21 grams total fat, seven grams saturated fat, zero trans fat, 40 mg. cholesterol, 990 mg. sodium (MAMMA MIA!), 35 grams total carbs, two grams dietary fiber, three grams sugars and 21 grams protein.  Also taking a bow are 8% (D.V.) Vitamin A, 2% Vitamin C, 25% calcium and 15% iron.

TASTE TIP:

Be careful not to overheat these frozen pizzas or the crusts may become too hard as the pizza cools enough to eat.  A couple of minutes heating time or just until the cheese melts is enough in most modern microwaves.

Say, have you ever actually been to the Home Run Inn restaurants? Boy, do they smell good.
