I am starting to think about this year's vegetable garden. I have 2 10x10 raised beds which we fill with compost and fresh top soil from the dump each spring. I usually plant lettuce, swiss chard, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers. bell peppers, and jalapenos. Anything else is something new that I've decided to try. Over the years I've also planted celery, carrots, radishes, eggplant, butternut squash, canteloupe, watermelon, kale, broccoli, etc. I also do 4 or 5 tomato plants and many pots of herbs that I keep on the deck right outside the kitchen.
Do you grow a veggie garden in the summer? If not, are you considering one in these rough economic times?
I have a small garden that I always grow tomatoes, peppers and squash. I have Egyptian onions that come back each year as well as a bed of mint that I grow and dry. I experiment with herbs each year and any other vegetable I decide to try. It is amazing how much food can be produced in a small area. I keep saying I am going to grow potaotes in tires but I haven't done it yet.
We have a garden every year. Have a huge crop of asparugus and also rhubarb that come up every year. I freeze them for the winter months. We plant red potatos (till using last years crop stored in basement), onions, lettuce, carrots, radishes, green beans, sweet corn, tomatoes, jalapenos, hot banana peppers, and of course pumpkins for those jack-o-laterns for the Grandchildren. It is a lot of work but it can also be fun when the whole family does it together.
