There's just something about digging up the dirt and planting seeds or seedlings and then seeing those grow that puts things in perspective.

What are you planting this year? Why did you pick the items you picked?

I'm probably just going to split some of my flowers since I started a new flower bed last year. I probably won't do a vegetable garden because I haven't had much luck in growing veggies but I might--if I do, it would probably be cucumbers, lettuce, corn, beans, potatoes, and tomatoes. Those are foods that we like to eat.

You know I think for the first time I'll buy the tomatoes in the pots that can go on our deck. Because we are right on the ocean nothing will grow. Before we moved we had everything - even watermelon. I'd love to have a garden. We tried one year and it was a failure.

I just planted my very first garden!  I have tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapeno, green bell peppers, red bell peppers, sweet banana peppers, tomatillos, thyme, cilantro, Italian parsley and basil.

This year I think I'm going to do more container gardening .  I like Pole beans, cucumbers, squash, bell pepper, tomatoes.

I have chosen these flower's  because I like texture, variety and color in my gardens.

Victoria sage, Purple coneflower, Coreopsis, Anise hyssop, Liatris  Speedwell, Gerber daisy, Geranium, Pestemon, Seathrift, Sedums, Latana. These are just a few of my favorites.

There's nothing like the flavor of real tomatoes and crisp peppers in all colors and "temperatures".
I'm planting again this year but in a new spot since dog Shelby is as fond of veggies as she is of kibble.  Last year I had a nice garden spot.  This year, I'll probably be planting in pots and hope for the best on the south side of our house.  I'm trying onion sets for the first time.
Just think of "Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?" with her sun hat and her watering can.

I always have one bed that is stricly for Impatiens.  They're so easy to grow!  Then I have Marigolds in another, and Hibuscus later in the summer.  I'd love a vegetable garden, but the squirrels always take it over.

Check out this site I found today. I started a discussion about it without realizing how many gardening threads were already started. Oops!

Got my garden in and it's beginning to flourish already!  Tomatoes, loads of peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, peas, strawberries, and a host of herbs.  I just added a photo of my Butterfly garden for 2009.  Spring hopes eternal and Fall is a time of harvest! :D  Bon Appetite!

Good news!  I've got tiny Hungarian Wax Peppers (mildly hot), developing tomatoes and zucchini and -- BAD news -- my first tomato worms of the season.  Look for new photo documentation on my site later this weekend.

Just realized there won't be any yard sale on the drive alongside the house since that's where my veggies are.  Change is stimulating, though, so all will work out according to a new plan.  (I fervently hope!)

This sounds great!  And you're such a good cook, you'll really know what to do with all that stuff too.  Good luck!

Okay, guys, I am personal witness to how well my cousin's plants are doing and how cute she looks in that gardening hat of hers!  I predict major tomato and pepper crops for the Tuneful family later in the summer!

Well I wimped out a little this year and only planted 5 container gardens. I usually do three on my back deck and plant a few flats of things in the front yard.  But this year I got lazy and just did the three on the deck (red geraniums, white wave petunias, vinca vines and johnny jump ups) and two on the front porch that are just red geraniums, white petunias, and a spiky thing sticking out the top.

Oooh I absolutely adore jade!  I had one that I had for about 10 years but it died when I brought a new plant into the house that had some sort of bug and it spread to the jade :(  I need to get another. It was huge!

Harvested my first zucchini today!  The Soil Moist I put in my pots is working better than I ever imagined it would.  Really cuts down on watering.  (If you're interested, please see my review for the details).

Expecting some cherry tomatoes in about a week.  Doing some of my pot watering with gray water.  I turn on the kitchen faucet and let it run into an empty milk container until it gets hot enough for dishwashing.  (I've also been known to grab a couple gallons of bathwater before pulling the plug.)

I love reading about all the flowers I love that just won't work here in L.A.  (Except for Chellerose and Buggheart's jade plants and a few other hardy souls.)

We have a hanging planter in the backyard with wilted flowers. Does that count?

It's a container garden. Marigolds, pansies, 5 plants I can't remember names of, an aloe, herbs, a strawberry plant from plants that hubby's father had years ago. It's a nice remembrance of him.

I have 2 10x10 raised garden beds.  In them I've planted: zucchini, yellow squash, mini pumpkins, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, banana peppers, swiss chard, collard greens, cucumbers, and 4 kinds of tomatoes: roma, grape, Big Boy, and Better Boy.  I also have basil, parsley, cilantro, sage, tarragon, oregano, dill, and rosemary growing in pots outside the kitchen door.  ooh also have 2 pots of strawberries which I've never tried before.

The mini pumpkins, hot peppers, and collards are for the parrots.  The rest is for the humans in the house!

I had no idea that parrots eat hot peppers, mini pumpkins, or collards. That's very interesting.

Truth be told, the parrots will eat any of the things that I planted.  They get loads of squash and cucumbers at the height of summer because I just don't know what to do with it all! They basically eat any fruit or vegetable that you can think of except avocados which will kill them.

I live in the Midwest and am trying raised bed gardening for the first time this year.  I grew all but my Okra plants from heirloom seeds.  This was my first year growing my own plants from seed and I found it very rewarding and much cheaper than buying grown plants.  I planted my tomato seeds in the middle of February and put them out under cover in April.  I am already picking ripe tomatoes and hope to harvest enough to can by the beginning of July.  I would say raised bed gardening has been the EASIEST method I have tried yet.  I also have the healthiest plants I have ever had.  Putting straw down in the beds has helped keep the moisture in so I don't have to water as much and I don't have the backbreaking task of pulling weeds!!!  If you can't tell I'm excited about gardening and I love it.  You can see a video of my garden on YouTube by searching for my channel KristieSue.  I love seeing others gardens so if you have pictures or video's I'd love to look.  I'm always getting new idea's from checking out what others are doing.

getting lots of yellow/green zucchini, cucumbers, and swiss chard right now.  Collards are about ready.  I'll puree and freeze them to use in "bird bread" for the parrots this winter.  Still waiting on tomatoes, peppers, and pumpkins.

Also have basil, parsley, and cilantro ready for use.  Still waiting on rosemary and sage, though.
