My entire yard is ALL SHADE. If you plant hostas (as I see some have suggested) you must have a fenced yard or NO DEER. Hostas are like candy to them. If you have a fence and you decide to go with the carefree hostas---then choose the LIGHTER shades or the two-toned ones. The reason for this is that the darker shades really do not add anything to your already dark and shaded garden. I learned this from experience. Also be aware that hostas come back year after year. They are not cheap, but can VERY VERY easily be divided in the spring and then you can potentially (over the years) have 50 of them just from dividing them.
Vinca, four-O'Clocks, seed begonia, impatiens, and snapdragons all do very well in the shade. If you want color---plant them. If you want an ornamental-type of grass clumps.....LIROPE GRASS is very good in the shade. It is not cheap....but it can easily be divided anytime and then you will get more bang for your buck.
If you do choose to plant four-O'Clocks.....after they are finished blooming-where the flower was will be a dark circular seed. These can be removed and planted the following year....so you also get lots for your buck.
I love having my shade garden and it is low, low maintenance with the plants that I have suggested for you. The best of luck.
