What happened to the tomatoe crop this year.  My big boys starting rotting on the plant while they were still green.  Thank God for the cherry and grape tomatoes, I am still reaping the rewards.

That was the fungus that alot of people here had. I was one of the few lucky ones that didn't get it. Thank goodness because I had close to a hundred plants , all varieties.

We got big, tall green plants and 2 tiny tomatoes, which got eaten by a critter overnight.  Here, it was the drought AND the heat.  Those big plants are still standing there, putting out flowers and no new 'maters :( I planted some seeds a couple of weeks ago and nothing so far.

There's a great song by Guy Clarke called "Home Grown Tomatoes" ~ this thread reminds me of it...check it out!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-QzLIjL1u4

HI, I recently moved from the city, to cow country outside of Attica NY, and I am a firm believer in container gardening.. Along the south side of the hose I have plastic(black)  Pots that are 42" wide and 3 feet deep, The Tomatoes went in ariund the 20th of June, (2009) and My hubby laughed at me, and said only a city slicker would do this( we are recently married- and he is a country boy) Case in point, a little black soil, well rotted cow pies, Epsome salt, more black soil, dig holes, put in plants, water, and feed reguarly with a good compost, I have had over 400 lbs of Tomatoes- from Beef Stakes/To Early Boy, and here it is October, and still producing.  Probably will have to cover them with plastic tonight...they stand over 5 feet tall, and Jeff( the new hubby) had to build a trellis to support the Vines....and that comes from a city slicker...LOL

I am still canning tomato's.I have made every sauce and jucie I can think of this year.  I live in IL and we had a very mild summer. Really only one week of day after day hot hot heat. So the garden did wonderfully this year. Just last night we had sweet corn from the garden off the last planting. What a great year the cupboards are full.

I have to say I am surprised at my tomato crop this year...did pretty good and it was the first year for my Topsy Turvy...I really didn't think it would work lol.

For the rotting on the bottom of the tomato put your egg shells on top of the dirt. I was told this a few years ago and it worked wonders.  I have my hubby trained in the spring and summer to save his egg shells for me.

Hubby made an all day sauce that was so yummy and I just love to cut the tomatoes up and eat the slices and for an extra treat my mom gave us when we were growing up.  Dice up the tomatoes and sprinkle sugar on it and let it sit for a bit and enjoy...I now use Splenda on it :)

I am already planning for next year and the one tomato that will be in it will be  stripie tomatos...OMG this tomato has such a wonderful flavor and it also have a wonderful sweetness to it. My neighbor gave me one of hers and I am hooked and I can see these making a really good sauce. Not to mention they are really cool looking inside and out.
