Home Depot Stores —

For the last few years, Home Depot has been going downhill. When we first moved to this area about 4 years ago, I had a hard time getting them to honor the promise of a gift card with a lawn mower purchase. High employee turnover, with long-time employees leaving, started a couple years ago. They have a tendency to stop carrying items they've carried a long time, to reduce the number of different items, I guess. I have to keep going to Lowe's to get something I used to get at Home Depot, and today they made a strong effort to keep me from coming back.

I wrote a review yesterday on the GE Smartwater GX1S50F water filter system: It broke after 10 months with a 1-year warranty, a warranty that says my only option is to take it back to the store. ALL OF IT: filter, faucet, connectors, tubing, all of it hooked up under my sink. I said that I was going to see if Home Depot would let me bring back just the part that was causing the problem.

So I called Home Depot today, and they didn't want me to bring back ANY of it; the store manager said they only accept returns up to 90 days. I read the warranty to them, where it says return to the store. He said, no, I had to deal with GE, it wasn't the store's problem. I said, well, if GE won't help me, and you won't help me, I guess my only option is the state's attorney general. And at that point, the manager said their CORPORATE policy is if any customer mentions calling either a lawyer or the attorney general, they won't talk to you any further; they have to hang up the phone. Home Depot must have a LOT of unhappy customers threatening them with legal action if they have a corporate policy like that!

So, my last call was back to GE, to give them the option of doing something about it before I called the AG. The woman at GE said something like, "The store manager knows perfectly well that we have a 1-year return-to-store warranty; I'll call him." She called him, and then told me to take everything back to the store, and they will give me a replacement. We'll see.
