We were given this humidifier by a friend who was moving out of town. We live in the dry desert of Utah, and this humidifier has been extremely helpful, particularly during allergy season. Performance This humidifier adds a good amount of moisture to the air. It helps reduce dry skin and dry eyes. The added moisture from the humidifier also seems to help keep pollen down during allergy season. If I don't use it, my nose often plugs up with congestion during the night and I do not sleep as well. But with the humidifier running, the congestion clears up and I am able to sleep much better. As an added bonus, this humidifier also helps cool the air, since adding moisture to air cools the air temperature. The fan blows the cooled air out into the room, cooling down the room. It certainly isn't enough for a whole house, but it does keep our bedroom cooler at night. Ease of Cleaning If you don't use distilled water, you can end up with mineral residue dried on the inside of the humidifier as well as inside the tank that is quite hard to remove. Durability We received this used and have used it extensively ourselves without anything breaking down.

This humidifier was the second attempt at purchasing one for my husband's cabin in Pennsylvania. This unit looked really good when I was researching humidifiers. It was priced well and it had gotten good reviews. I purchased it here in Florida for a good price. It is a durable product because it got bumped around on the long drive to Pennsylvania and still worked great when I hooked it up. This humidifier combated the dry winter air very nicely. The bedroom is a large room and it raised the humidity in that room to a higher level and made it more comfortable. The output was wonderful. It helped bring the humidity up in both upstairs and downstairs. I noticed that my nosebleeds from the dry air lessened a lot after purchasing and using this product. I am really glad that this one worked and I would recommend purchasing it if you need a great humidifier. It puts out a lot of moisture for a medium sized humidifier and it is still going strong after having it awhile. It fits in with the decor and does not look ugly or out of place. It was well worth what I paid for it.

We first bought this product when our son was sick and stuffy. It was the cheapest one there was, so we weren't expecting it to be amazing, but we were hoping it would at least do the job of putting enough moisture in the air to help with his congestion and breathing. Well, it does an okay job, but I would definitely keep looking and pay a little more for something more worth your money. I didn't think much of it, until I was visiting my mom and she had bought an expensive, really nice, humidifier. I was blown away at how awesome it was. So now I look down on ours even more. The worst part about it is the design. You can take everything apart, but the water tank it a pain to get on just right so that the water flows into the machine. And the hard water build up is crazy. It just ends up being a big mess inside after using it, and therefore it starts to smell a bit. I would definitely not purchase this again.

I got this because it was a warm mist humidifier which I thought would be good for my kids when it is cold out so that it was blowing a warm amount out instead of just plain cold like my other humidifier. This is not my first humidifier so I have used a lot of them and this one gets nastier than anything I have ever seen before. Per the instructions after every single use I cleaned this, and I cleaned it very well, but it still managed to grow mold on the filter after just TWO DAYS! I could not believe it. I was so disgusted with it as it is blowing it out all over my children! I even used bleach and cleaned it all and yet again, it kept on happening. This system is not what I expected it to be and definitely not healthy. It also started to make it grow mold on the wall behind where it was sitting after a week. I am not impressed with this product and would never recommend it to anyone, especially if you have children who you want to keep healthy and not sick!

We live in a very dry climate (New Engaldn in the winter with forced air heat), so thought this might help. It does work -- it will put humidity into your air. Unfortunately, it is also very very hard to clean. It often smells, and it accumulates all kinds of disgusting slime and goo after use. We threw ours away after one winter. Waste of money.

Quiet and performs well but does require maintenance Output Volume The steam is warm enough to make a difference on a cold evening when I have sinus congestion. It works quietly enough to be perfect for overnight use. Ease of Cleaning I don't typically clean it with vinegar or anything special, but, as with all humidifiers and especially warm air humidifiers, it should be cleaned at least every other day if it is being used for daily use. I typically rinse it out every other day (when I'm filling it). It easily disassembles into the output piece, the water tank, and a lower basin to aid in cleaning. Plus, the tank holds a great deal of water, enough to run all evening and night with some left.

I don't know wh others complain about the algae, because with humidifiers in general you are supposed to clean them after every use - it even says so in the instructions manual. The humidifier is a little bit noisy, but I think it works well. The air doesn't get that warm, but it does get moist. The cleaning is not too bad, as long as you do it daily. Sometimes I will skip a day and let the humidifer run for two nights, but I make sure to rinse it out after that. I havne't cleaned it like the instructions say with vinegar and in the dishwasher, but mine still seems fine. I used it straight for almost two months with the cleaning. But I haven't used it in the past month -but I made sure to rinse it out and make sure all parts dry before storing it.

We decided we needed a humidifier for the winter. Without any research whatsoever, my husband bought the first one he saw. Then, when we took it out of the box and read all the maintenance instructions, I wanted him to returm it. He thought we should try it. That was 4 months ago and I really regret that we kept it because it's horrid to clean. The bottom section gets full of brown-color gunk and it smells. According to the directions, you're supposed to clean it -- all parts of it -- every time you use it. Since we used it every night in our bedroom, one of us had to dismantle the danged thing and clean it ***every day***. Brown gunk and all. That got tiresome, so we quit using it after a month. It's fairly quiet and puts a lot of moisture in the air. So it's doing the job we expected. We quit using it because it was too difficult to clean. It's not doing us any good sitting in a corner unplugged. It has 3 speeds, which is a plus, but we only ran it on "low" because on "medium" and "high" it spit drops of water, and not a fine mist. I do not recommend the Holmes Model HM5082.

This small room humidifier is nice because its warm mist, and relatively quiet for a small room.  No fans in it.  But, there is a huge drawback, after only two days of using it I found algae, a ton, growing in the bottom water recepticle.  There was no filter, so it was spewed into the air.  I returned it and got a cool mist one.  So, if you are okay with cleaning it atleast weekly, this is a great unit.  But I was not.  I went for a large whole place humidifier instead after this and love it. I would have to say that after looking at the algae, which was very white crusty, on the inside heating element I vowed to never do another warm mist humidifier again.  Its not just holmes, its warm mist.  It may be a good thing for a kid who is sick and for a one or two weeks a year thing, but not for all winter.  Thats for sure.  It would be wayy too much cleaning and not enough humidity worth the cleaning. lol.
