I gave up smoking awhile back, but when I did smoke, I tried a series of air purifiers and/or ionizers, most of which really did nothing except move around the air in their immediate vicinity.
The one I ended up using for several years was a Holmes tower model. I had several of them, actually. They each lasted about a year and a half if run constantly. The original units cost about $69 at Walmart, and the filters have to be replaced every couple of months to keep them functioning at peak level.
My last one was called a Holmes HAP424-U Hepa-Type Tower Air Purifier. I can recommend it highly for removing smoke odors. It has three speeds and an optional ionizer. I must also caution you that if the ionizer isn't running, then it won't get rid of the smoke smell. I could always tell when someone in my house had turned off the ionizer because then you could smell the cigarette odor again. But as long as that was running, you really couldn't tell any smokers lived there.
