Holmes Humidifier - Cool Mist Humidifier - HM1280-HU Review

I used to sleep with the Holmes HM1280-HU Cool Mist Humidifier in my bedroom.  I have allergies, sinus issues caused by the allergies, and moderate-to-severe asthma.  A friend suggested using a humidifier to help with the asthma and dry nasal passage issue.  I set this machine up in my room and was very comfortable when I went to sleep for a year... Then I met my fiance.  More on that later.

This humidifier holds 2.5 gallons of water which is enough to run it for 24 hours straight on low.  It has a low and high setting for you to control the amount of cool mist dispensed into the air.  Because this humidifier has no built-in sensor, you need to use a hygrometer and the fan settings to maintain your desired humidity level.

It worked well for me.  The bedroom was nice and humid which allowed me to sleep comfortably.  Unfortunately, my fiance cannot sleep with any type of noise in the bedroom, so I had to stop using the Holmes 1280-HU Cool Mist Humidifier.  I moved it into my "bird room" because I have one parrot who gets very dry and itchy during the winter.  I run this machine in their room from 5pm to 5am each day and it does a great job of keeping them comfortable.

The only "hassle" with owning this humidifier is the same thing you'd deal with if you owned any other brand: keeping it clean and changing the filter.  I add a few drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) to every tank of water that I fill up.  I also soak the bottom basin and the water tank in a bleach solution once a week.  The wick filter must be changed every couple of months at the minimum.  I change it more often because I have parrots who are very sensitive to mold and mildew.

I have been very happy with my Holmes 1280-HU Cool Mist Humidifier.  It is effective in increasing humidity, easy to use/clean, and a steady workhorse machine that has run reliably each night (during the winter) for the past 3 years.  I wish I could move it back into my bedroom because it really did help my asthma.  In any case, this humidifier is an excellent choice for those who need to increase the moisture in a small to medium-sized room.
