During the winter and early spring, I keep a humidifier running in my bedroom at night. I have moderate to severe asthma and increasing the humidity has been suggested as a way to improve my symptoms. When I first bought the humidifier, I bought a big old bottle of Holmes Bacteriostat to help keep it clean. I was very happy with its performance and have continued to use this product in my humidifier ever since.
According to the label, Bacteriostat "controls build up of bacteria and algae in water tanks of portable humidifiers." It is designed to be used in portable cool mist devices but should not be used in heat vaporizing or atomizing humidifiers. The instructions state that you should add one capful (1/6th ounce) of product per gallon of water. It is extremely easy to use Bacteriostat and I really like the fact that it doesn't have any kind of strong chemical odor to irritate my allergies or asthma. I do have one suggestion for those who use it, though: be sure to add the water to the tank first and then add the desired amount of Bacteriostat. If you add them in the reverse order, this product will produce lots of bubbles which makes it difficult to really fill the tank completely before returning it to the humidifier base.
This product delivers on its promises. When I use it daily, the humidifier's water tank remains clean and clear. A 32 fluid ounce bottle of Bacteriostat costs about $5 and lasts me for almost the entire winter. If you use a cool mist humidifier regularly, it is definitely worth picking up a bottle of this product.
