This was a first cruise for my wife and I and we were blown away by the whole experience. We've since learned that Holland America is pretty much the cream of the crop for personal attention and (not having experienced others) I can't disagree with that assessment. We're saving up our coins for when we can do it again.

Holland America is all about "up beat"! Every crew member you encounter will greet you with respect, a smile and a kind word. The crew will have a special "cookout" to show off their ethnic dishes and a special stage show to share their native talents.

I can't imagine what it takes to coordinate 1100 meals a day, but the chefs and dining crew do it with alacrity. They too will give you a song and a show near the end of your cruise. If you don't care to be pampered in the immaculate (though somewhat noisy) main dining room, try a more private one, or have your meal delivered to your stateroom at no extra charge.

Being on a budget and because we wanted to "learn the ropes", we didn't participate in any of the extra-cost excursions. We weren't at all disappointed, as there was always plenty to do within walking distance of the ship. We learned from others that, while some excursions were awesome, there were also a few that were a waste of time. But, hey, if it's hot when you return to the ship, there will be someone waiting to make sure you get a nice cool hand-towel to wipe your brow.

There's something for all ages on board.  The stage productions were incredible, professionally-done, works of art. One actress we spoke with, told us that some dresses in their wardrobe can run in the neighborhood of $10,000!

While on board there's a "no-currency" policy. Leave your money in your room vault for visiting shops on shore. Alcoholic beverages and other items that you purchase on board will go on your room card. I understand that the soda card is intended to curb waste but, at least on this cruise line, it just seemed a really out-of-place, tacky, solution. My one suggestion to them would be to ditch the whole idea. Give away the soda, guys, geeze!

This comment is not Zuiderdam-specific so I'll keep it short: For the Carribbean cruises, I'd definitely recommend a stateroom with a veranda. Step out there in the still-of-the-night and you'll understand.

I'm so ready to go on a cruise! It's been years, before I got married. I think I finally have my husband convinced. Nice job on your review :)--Karen

Nice job - I can't imagine not having a veranda BUT the money difference is huge. We took one for this 2 week cruise. On the one hand we thought that for 2 weeks it was sooo much more $ and on the other hand we thought that we'd really enjoy it (had one 2 years ago) for 2 weeks. Actually this was a "discussion" and I won:) Jo
