For me the best gifts are homemade.

I've got a few. My kids made me a scrapbook with pictures from when they were born to the year I received it. Each year they give me a new scrapbook page to add to the scrapbook! It's a very personal and cherrished item.

I also love gift baskets! Someone taking the time to decide what items to put into a basket that they think I will enjoy is a true labor of love.

oh yeah, another great gift I received that was homemade was a cookie recipe w/ all the ingredients and some cookie cutters all put together on a nice nonstick cookie sheet.

The nicest, if perhaps now one of the saddest, is a sign made for me by one of the few Internet "sweeties" I actually met in person.  She sent me this handmade and painted little sign that bears the words "Hugs and kisses to someone I misses" - which is how she signed her e-mails when we were involved.

One of my friends made me a "this too shall pass" sign in her clay class.  I thought it was so sweet that she not only made me something personalized, but she even remembered my favorite phrase!

I forgot. another of my favorite homemade gifts is the little bowl my son made for me in kindergarden, I still have it in my hutch though he (at 21) keeps telling me to throw it away. I keep telling him NO WAY, I'm going to be giving it to his children (when and if he ever gives me some grandkids) when they grow up!

I have received several handmade gifts that I cherish but one that still tugs at my heart is a beaded pair of candlestick holders. I have never used them because of the sacrifice it took to make them. This was a young woman who attended my church- she had a severe muscular disease that made it difficult to do much with her hands. Somehow, she painstakingly made them for me. The candlesticks are truly a gift of love.

Last year my aunt sent us a surprise gift for Christmas - she had compiled a collection of my grandmother's recipes and copied them all in a paper folder like cook book. My grandmother passed a few years ago, so it was great to be able to make the foods I loved for so long.

I actually used it a few days ago and just started bawling. It was weird to see her hand writing and know she wouldn't be writing any more letters or recipes. It's been more than three years now  and this is the first time it's every happened.

My grandmother used to knit and crochet all kinds of wonderful things, especially bootie slippers for all her grandchildren and especially if you were sleeping over and forgot to pack yours. She'd get out her basket of yarn, measure your foot with a strand of it and knit you up a pair in no time flat. It was the best pair of slippers I've ever had simply because they were so lovingly handmade by her.  To this day I still have a few pair that she made for me when I was a young teen, I'll cherish them always.

I feel the same way, I don't have her recipes except in my head because she never wrote them down. But I have one of the many quilts she made and I will always cherish it!

Colored crayon chicken scratches on random slips of paper from my nephews and niece. Straight to my heart.

My mom made me an afghan.  My hubby and I "fought" over it so she made him one.  :-)  It is the best gift we have received.
