My daughter is 13 years old and she trick or treated last year. I wasn't going to let her go this year, but I don't want to leave her home alone (my dh works nights sometimes) so I suggested she come with me and her younger brother. I told her she could dress up if she wanted to. She hasn't decided yet. So, at what age should children stop dressing up to go trick or treating?

I think it's good to leave it up to the child.  We went in 8th grade, and my friends talked me in to going in 9th grade but I felt "old' that year.  They went in 10th grade, I didn't.

Basically if your child still enjoys it and doesn't feel "old", then let them.  As long as they aren't trouble making teens :)  I don't mind if teens as old as 18 come to my door as long as they are in costume :-D

I agree that around 18 is the cutoff. 13 -14 years old is perfectly acceptable and nothing to worry about.

It is never to old to dress up, and why wait for Halloween to put on a costume? MMM, candy; and don't forget treats for the people taking the littlest one's out!

I would wait and see what she leans towards... if she clearly still wants to, I would encourage her. I don't either think it's a bad idea either if older teens dress up and go trick or treating! I don't think there's need to be picky about things like that

As long as a kid is willing to wear a costume and enjoy the fun, I'm happy to share "treats" with them.  Even if they're accompanying a younger child(ren) I think they are also entitled to a treat!

I think 18 is the cut-off age, since it's officially "adult" time, so i think under it must be kid, right? I went when I was older, and sometimes people would begrudgingly give me candy and say "you know this holiday is for KIDS, right?"

I actually don't care what age people are as long as they are in costume. Some adults dress up their babies in costume and go, and you know an infant isn't getting candy. Fun's fun.

i think 15 yrs old should be the cut off age, at this age they should realize this event is for the little children , they may have more fun handing out candy or having a halloween party for their friends.

I think it should be up to the kid.

One of my sons felt too old to go when he was in High School so imagine my surprise when he went as a college freshman with a bunch of friends. He never went again- I think it was a "good-bye to childhood" night...

I feel if you leave it up to your children they will decide when they're too old to go trick or treating. I know a lot of teens that go together and to me this is totally acceptable. I do agree regardless 18 yrs old should be the cut-off age.

well i look at this way... its just candy. if they are dressed up... im not going to ask them how old they are. lol when i was 21 i went to a costume party that was lame... so a few people asked if we wanted to go trick or treating... so i said sure. it was fun. some people wouldnt give us candy. but we didnt care and we didnt come back and egg your cars.

but i stopped when i was 14... because i wanted to make my yard  scary and dress up like jason... to let others enjoy the fear i had over the years.
