Hog Island Oyster Company - San Francisco, CA —

I'll cut to the chase - this is a tourist spot. But read the rest of my review for more details before drawing any hasty conclusions! Because despite the crowd and the gawkers it's worth checking out, at least once!

The ambiance one of the high points, brightly light, lots of white-tile, look-and-feel of a fishmarket. Take your mind off the crowd. Soak in the ambiance.

The service was also terrific. Since I was flying solo I chose to sit at the side-bar. I would have preferred the main oyster-bar but it was crowded and a bit chaotic. I was greeted promptly and with a smile. I started with a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, ordered a 1/2 dozen oysters, and an Ahi Tuna sandwich. Once the food came they kept a close eye on my needs but let me take care of business - just what I look for. Throughout the meal the service was pleasant, fast and efficient.

The food, however, food came all at once which is a pet-peeve of mine. I would have preferred the oysters first as an appetizer...but I guess I should have made that clear.

I ordered six "Hoodcanal" oysters and six "Steamboat oysters". The Hoodcanals were small-to-medium in size, light gray color, slightly fatty which is cut nicely with the teriaki sauce provided. The Steamboats were mildly sweet with just a touch of creamy fat to the taste, great straight or with a quick dunk in the light vinegar sauce.

The tuna on my tunafish sandwich was very fresh clean and rich, and the bread was crusty and fresh. However together it was a poor match - the crusty bread steamrolled the tuna each time I chomped down. Additionally there wasn't enough tuna to compensate for the size of the bread - in some parts of the sandwich the tuna got lost in other parts it slid out the side.

Overall, I'd say go to Hog Island Oyster Company at least once. Good energy and lots of fun. While my food all came at once, and the Ahi Tuna sandwich wasn't well thought trough, the food and beer is fresh and the service is fast friendly and efficient.

It's worth pointing out that the Ferry Building is also a great place for just window shopping and hitting the farmers market (I've gone on Sat, not sure if they have it on other days...)
