Most HelpfulThis a good computer for basic use for the price (<$900). It is the HP Pavilion DV6000 with AMD Turion, 1.6 GHz and an Nvidia 6150 graphics card. I use it for web surfing, emails, IM's and creating documents and DVD's. It has the Vista operating system and I had to buy a new version of Office (word, excel, etc.) for this laptop. It came pre-loaded with some software I've found useful like moviemaker, windows DVD maker and Quicktime. I was able to quickly download some video from my digital movie camera (which is why I wanted a firewire port) and within a few hours had cut a DVD for friends. Very...
review »I bought the dv6000 in July and haven't had a problem with it. The laptop is as fast as it was before I loaded all my software onto it.
Shutting it down takes seconds and it powers up in just about the same time.
The screen is big and bright and there is even internet TV with classic TV shows you can watch within second of pressing a button. The problem is choosing a show- there are numerous choices.
When we ordered this laptop at the beginning of the year, we went with a laptop versus a desktop, so we could be where our kids were. This has been a huge plus for our boys so we can be in the same room with them. They love looking at pictures and playing games on the internet with us. We used to stuck in our office and the boys would have to come find us.
I also love the fact that we can take it with us when we go on vacation. That way I am able to upload the pictures instantly and view them. We are also able to watch movies and listen to CD's. The sound quality is great.
I've been using this laptop for a couple of years now, and it's been a great workhorse. I'm online constantly, working with Web files, multimedia files, and, well, lots of "work" stuff, and I haven't had any trouble. Luckily, I got my laptop before the Windows Vista release and even though I did get the free Windows Vista CD, I haven't installed it. I'll stick with Windows XP as long as I can!
The only warning I have is that the hard drive I have isn't nearly big enough. I recommend you get the biggest hard drive you can possibly afford.
When I purchased this laptop, I brought it home, and there was no operating system installed. HP could not do anything about it, and luckily the store let me exchange it for another one. The second one had a bad CD/DVD drive, and after talking with their customer service agents, they sent me a whole new drive for free. They have excellent support, but I would have liked the machines to work correctly the first time. Other than that, the laptop is great, although I am not a fan of windows vista. The webcam is great and everything (including voice recognition) is easy to use.
