This a good computer for basic use for the price (<$900). It is the HP Pavilion DV6000 with AMD Turion, 1.6 GHz and an Nvidia 6150 graphics card. I use it for web surfing, emails, IM's and creating documents and DVD's. It has the Vista operating system and I had to buy a new version of Office (word, excel, etc.) for this laptop. It came pre-loaded with some software I've found useful like moviemaker, windows DVD maker and Quicktime. I was able to quickly download some video from my digital movie camera (which is why I wanted a firewire port) and within a few hours had cut a DVD for friends. Very easy to use. I had some initial problems getting the webcam to work and had to call HP support. This seems to be a common problem with this computer, I saw a lot of talk about it on forums. They were able to help me though and it's working fine now.
I use it strictly wireless in my house after setting up a wireless router and that has been awesome. I've also been able to connect to outside wireless networks when traveling.
Two problems I've found, one is the pathetic battery life. The battery dies after 2 hours away from a power source, that seems pretty low. The other issue was a lot of pre-loaded software was taking up a lot of space. I couldn't figure out how I was already using 1/2 of my disc space after just buying it - it was a lot of unneccessary sw. I had to spend a few hours uninstalling and deleting sw to clean it up.
