This is my 4th HP computer, I had 2 destops and 2 laptops.  I am also a stockholder and my shares have to go up $30 just to break even!  So you know I wouldn't say something bad about HP unless it was for real.  My laptop lost the wireless connection after I had it 4 months.  My laptop never leaves my kitchen desk so it has never been dropped or treated roughly.  I never even put in the battery because it is plugged in and never moves.

I had to send the laptop to CA for repairs, which were covered under warranty, but I lost everything that I had on it and had to start all over when I got it back. HP claims they replaced the system board.  Then 4 months later I lost my wireless connection AGAIN.  I had to send it to CA again and went through all that bother again of losing all my photos and files.  They claim they replaced the system board AGAIN also.

Also, when I purchased this laptop, it did not have Vista on it, but I got a CD and put it on.  I would not recommend Vista either.  When I sent the laptop for repairs the second time I told them to just put XP back on, not Vista.

But back to my laptop.  I sent a complaint letter to HP telling them about my problems and told them that I felt this laptop was defective.  I feel that I should get a new replacement laptop because this one is a lemon.  Someone called me from HP and said they were willing to give me an extra year of warranty for half price.  Big deal.  I again told them I wanted a replacement laptop.  They countered with a free year extra warranty.  I asked to speak to a supervisor and this bozo told me he didn't have one!  So I must have been speaking to the president, right?

So at this point, I have a junk laptop that has been repaired twice but at least I have another year of warranty for my trouble.  I don't think I will be buying an HP next time around.

March 1, 2008  UPDATE    My laptop crashed yesterday and I lost all of my files again!  I called HP and they want me to send it to CA for repairs for the THIRD time.  I had it for 1 year in January.  This thing is definitely defective.  UPDATE: This time when I got it back they said they replaced the hard drive.

December 7, 2008 UPDATE  My laptop has lost the wireless connection again and cannot be fixed.  This is the 4th time this has happened to this same laptop.  I spoke to the Hindu Hotline and they were absolutely of NO USE whatsoever.  Today I am going to try to reach an AMERICAN at HP and see if they will finally replace this piece of garbage.

I had a similar experience with HP Pavillion Elite m9200t. I bought it a year ago for $1600 -- not realizing that I could have built the same without a monitor for about $800. They sold me stuff like speakers that I didn't need because it was built into the monitor (which they didn't mention on their web site) and an already obsoluete wireless router. But the real problem is that the computer crashes every few months and cannot be rebooted, even from a fresh windows install. It is clearly a lemon like the notebook above -- but HP refuses to refund or replace with a new unit. They want to keep taking out and replacing pieces, and meanwhile I have no computer.

Luckily, that was my first, and my last HP computer. I have a computer I built myself about 6 years ago and it still runs fine, but HP can't build one that can go more than 2-3 months. Sheesh!.

DATWTY- I was told by the Canadian help desk (thank goodness an English speaking person, not the Hindu Hotline!) that the AMD processor is the problem in these laptops. He said that the Intel processor does not have the overheating problems. I don't know why they continue to use the AMD processor if that is the case. Is your computer still under warranty? If not, you could still try to state your case to HP and file a complaint because it is known to them that these computers are defective. As to my problem, they finally replaced my laptop with a refurbished one. I had it for less than 24 hours and it crashed! I had to wait another 2 weeks for another refurbished one, and so far it is still operating well. It, unfortunately, also has the AMD processor but it does NOT run hot like my former one. I can actually rest my wrists on it while I type and don't get third degree burns. I don't run a fan underneath it like I had to do with my original laptop either. Badger the heck out of HP and try to get some help from them.

is there anything that can be done to fix the over heating and wireless card going out?

Wow, what a difference a day makes. I just received a call from my HP Case manager and they did the right thing. With me on the phone and HP's website following along they custom built a new Laptop for me to replace mine!!!!!!! A dv7 series.....and to acknowledge all of the trouble I had they threw in $100's of dollars worth of upgrades and accessories. I am very pleased with the end results.

So here is the lesson I have learned. India tech support is a big problem. You have to get past that and once you do it's like a whole different world. India never did escalate the issue. They repeatedly lied telling me they did but they didn't. I figured out a way to do it myself.

Once I began working with a US based Case Manager is was pure bliss. My compliments go out to Derek @ HP who helped me. He was most courteous and professional. He followed through on every promise he made. Every return phone call....everything.

Tabbycat, thank you for the suggestion. I do plan to write a "snail mail" letter. My model is DV9225US and it cost about $1,600.00 new so it is no small loss. India support is absolutely appalling. HP should truly be ashamed of themselves for subjecting their Customer Base to that for anything but the most routine of issues. They have done everything possible to give me nothing but the run around when it comes to my Notebook Repair. I have purchased 20+ PC's from HP over the last three years for my Small Business and family but I will never ever buy one again after this experience. Now that I know what happens when something goes wrong I have more than learned my lesson.

Well, I think that calls for a replacement of a brand new computer. After a third repair you should get one anyway. Mine is still hanging in there after my 3rd repair, but if it breaks or starts acting up before my warranty is up, I'm demanding a new one. Don't just let them get away with losing your laptop. Read the letter that Shambu wrote to HP and she got satisfaction. Go for it!

kjdinsd wrote on Oct 29, 2008 at 8:47AM

I have the same exact problem with a DV9000 series. But mine went back to HP for the third repair and I am certain the lost it! It's been gone for a month and NO ONE at HP can tell me what happened to it. This really sucks.

In response to tabbycat's comment from Jul 17, 2008 at 9:55PM:

Here ya go -

Dear Mr. Hurd,

We purchased the HP Pavillion Notebook dv9000 exactly 13 months ago for business purposes. Twenty-seven days after the warranty ran out the motherboard suddenly died. We are a non-profit organization and unfortunately now have to spend our coveted dollars on repairing the computer. Basic computer components should have a longer and stronger warranty. It is obviously not the fault of the computer user that the motherboard failed 13 months after purchase.

After having read numerous comments at http://www.viewpoints.com/Hewlett-Packard-HP-Pavilion-DV9000--26662-review-5a2e0 which describe this computer as fundamentally flawed – most notable by an HP tech – I am very concerned that this is not the last of our computer troubles. Comment by HP Technical representative:

June 28, 2008 “… As an HP tech rep I can tell you that the dv9000 model was defective from the design table up. You are correct in your assumption relating to the heat problem. The unit is notorious for heat related burn outs. The WiFi problem you had is indicative of the heat related burnout of the WiFi bus not the actual card. I have a 9000 and this one has been in the shop 5 times in the first 14mo of use. But hat is not where the problems with unit end. If you use wired ethernet and continue to opeate the unit, thw heat related issue wtih your WiFi will also affect the video circuit. Then the video goes out an *poof*... well there you are!”

I am very concerned that this motherboard failure, which will cost us $430 to fix, will not be the end of our problems. I am also concerned that it seems we purchased a defective model of computer.

When products are defective most corporations order a recall and offer a refund. I urge you to take this model off the market if it is in fact defective and to issue all who purchased this model a new computer.
I also urge HP to allow HP customers to renew their warranty even after the 12 month deadline.

Thank you

Sincerely,

Shambu-that's fantastic! How on earth did you get such a quick response? I'd love to read your letter. Must have been very convincing.

In response to shambu's comment from Jul 14, 2008 at 2:00PM:

Well thanks to your suggestion Tabbycat, and probably the posting by the HP Tech rep, my letter convinced HP to pay for this repair, saving me $430 dollars! They have also allowed me to renew my warranty for one year. Best thing that's happened all day! Thanks again!

Never doubt the power of a letter!

Shambu-I would write a letter to HP and tell them about your problem. Also, tell them about all the comments on this site about this crummy computer. Who knows, maybe they will come through for you. Wouldn't hurt to try. Mine still acts up after 3 repairs and I am sure it will crash again. Especially after reading AF-Vet's comments and he's an HP tech rep.

shambu wrote on Jul 14, 2008 at 2:00PM

I have had my HP Pavillion for exactly 13 months - and sadly we forgot to renew our warranty - and the motherboard is apparently dead. Such an expensive piece of equipment should last a bit longer than 13 months! And of course we are now screwed - hope this is the last of the problems!

Hi Phinechine, I really feel these particular laptops are defective. I bought mine at
CompUSA also. I just got mine back from it's third repair....this time they say they
replaced the hard drive. Piece of junk.

phinechine wrote on Mar 10, 2008 at 10:24AM

my laptop seems to crash every 3 months.. i have been so disappointed with this laptop.. more disappointed that CompUSA in the area where the laptop was purchased with ALL of the warranties that they offered... is now gone out of business. therefore im stuck with a broke, crashed laptop that has to be sent out anyway.. which is exactly what I was hoping to avoid... otherwise i could have and should have purchased it from Best-buy who has an instore technical department....
would i buy another one? certainly not... would i recomend the HP Pavillion to anyone.... ? certainly not!

Thank you so much for the info, Scott! This is very helpful. I seem to have so many unusual problems with this laptop. I had to call the Hindu Hotline again last week and they were not able to help me with my latest problem. I am amazed that you had your laptop for 3 years and they replaced it! I will definitely keep your email address and contact you if I need to. Thanks again!
UPDATE TO MY RESPONSE TO SCOTT! My computer crashed about an hour after I left the above message to thank you. After talking to Hindu Hotline for 45 minutes I was told I had to use my recovery disks and AGAIN lose all of my information---grrrrrr. Five hours later the third disk froze and I had to call HP again. Now they are sending me a recovery disk to try - at no charge - BFD! I hate this laptop!

scottblock22 wrote on Feb 26, 2008 at 12:34AM

Hey man,

I'm talking from experience when I say this as I have taken advantage of HP's warranty terms. I've gone through similar problems to you, except my laptop is three years old. I contacted HP and they talked me through the entire process. I spoke with a case manager (last line to corporate) and they told me in advance that HP followed the bench rule where if you send in your laptop three times and if it comes back not meeting your expectations you can file for a replacement. In my case, this 3 year old laptop was covered in the warranty and for my hassles they allowed me to select and customize a laptop under the Entertainment category. Of course he allowed me to max everything out except for the processor. Send it in once more and on the third time of getting it back send me an email and I can help you to take advantage of the warranty through a replacement. Just email me anyways at scottblock22@gmail.com. Thought this would help you out. HP is a very good company, however the workmanship of the product can fail over time. Blame it on the components not the actual company. The wireless card is a broadcom product.
